This position offers a highly engaging and rewarding opportunity for a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to practice at the top of their professional scope within a collaborative orthopedic surgical environment. The role is structured to support both new graduates and experienced APPs seeking to develop advanced surgical and clinical expertise in a specialty-focused setting.
The NP or PA will work closely with orthopedic surgeons and a multidisciplinary care team that includes residents inpatient and outpatient allied health staff and collaborating specialties. Responsibilities span the full continuum of orthopedic care including pre-operative evaluation intra-operative first assisting and postoperative management. The APP will maintain independent clinic schedules participate in hospital rounds and progressively develop autonomy under mentorship from assigned consultants.
In addition to scheduled clinical and surgical responsibilities the APP participates in the evaluation and management of acute orthopedic injuries presenting through the Emergency Department. The hospital is a Level III trauma center providing exposure to urgent musculoskeletal care and reinforcing strong decision-making skills in acute settings.
This role primarily supports a hand surgeon within a general orthopedic practice with opportunities to cross-cover other orthopedic subspecialties to broaden clinical experience. The position is intentionally designed to allow APPs to build deep specialty knowledge while working in a supportive academic culture that emphasizes teamwork surgeon accessibility and continuous professional growth.
A structured onboarding period of approximately 36 months is provided based on prior experience to ensure a strong foundation in both clinical and surgical responsibilities. The work is intellectually challenging and fast-paced yet supported by a cohesive team environment that prioritizes mentorship and patient-centered care.
Participation in the orthopedic call schedule is an integral component of the role. Call responsibilities are shared evenly among providers (approximately 1:6) and include weekday and weekend home call. During daytime hours the APP serves as first call. Overnight the APP provides first call coverage for hospital needs and patient phone calls while surgeons are first call for the ED and transfers. The call structure is designed to maintain high-quality patient care while promoting provider sustainability.
The APP will join a team of 5 Advanced Practice Providers 6 orthopedic surgeons a podiatry team and non-operative specialists within the Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine department. The department is known for its strong team culture collaborative practice model and commitment to APP professional development.

Nurse Practitioner: Masters prepared graduate of an accredited school of nursing and Nurse Practitioner program. Current Minnesota RN license and certification as an FNP ACNP or ANP.
Physician Assistant: Graduate of accredited Physician Assistant program with current PA certification by NCCPA and registration as a PA by the Minnesota State Board of Medical Practice.
Must be eligible for DEA registration. Completion of the BLS course is required and ACLS is preferred.
Additional Qualifications:
One to two years of clinical and/or surgical experience preferred but not required. Consultant-specific training and mentorship will be provided.
The ideal candidate demonstrates strong clinical judgment adaptability and the ability to function independently within a team-based surgical practice. Excellent interpersonal oral and written communication skills are essential for effective collaboration with patients families and multidisciplinary colleagues. Strong organizational and time management skills are critical in a fast-paced orthopedic environment.
