Job Title: Cook

PURPOSE STATEMENT

The Cook prepares and serves nutritious meals as outlined on menus in accordance with applicable food service and safety regulations.

Supervision: Program Services Coordinator or designate.

Service

Responsibilities:

This Position Description indicates the general nature and level of work expected of the incumbent. It is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities duties or responsibilities of the incumbent.

Organizational Responsibilities:

1. Develop an understanding of the Mission of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities

2. Maintain information in confidence as required

3. Participate as an active and responsible team member in all work groups through which position responsibilities are achieved

4. Adhere to standards that are consistent with the values & philosophy of The Salvation Army and the Halton Lighthouse.

5. To attend all seminars and training sessions as requested by Management

6. Read and follow the Policy & Procedures Manual and the Employee Handbook.

7. Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Armys health and safety policies and procedures.

8. As required and as applicable make suggestions that will improve efficiency working conditions or procedures to Management.

9. Participate in regular direct supervision with immediate supervisor and comply by attending to noted areas needing improvement to ensure maximum job performance.

10. Participate in yearly formal evaluation.

11. Represent The Salvation Army Lighthouse in a professional manner at all times.

12. Be punctual and work all hours scheduled advising immediate supervisor anytime this is not possible.

13. Read and adhere to the policies and procedures of The Lighthouse.

14. Participate in staff development as required.

15. Work as an effective member of the Lighthouse team whether staff members or volunteers.

This Position Description will be reviewed by the employee and supervisor on a regular basis. Amendments can be made at any time at the discretion of the employer.

PHYSICAL EFFORT/DETERITY REQUIRED:

The performance of the job requires a frequent amount of standing moderate amounts of lifting cutting chopping carrying supplies and walking.

The incumbent is required to lift more than 20 pounds.

CONCENTRATION REQUIRED:

The performance of the job requires frequent attention to the preparation of food reading recipes adhering to safety procedures and regulations and occasionally ordering supplies.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR FINANCIAL RESOURCES:

The incumbents responsibility for Financial Resources:

The incumbent is involved in minor financial matters regularly or on a relief basis or has responsibility for the wise use of his/her own resources. He/She may be authorized to spend disburse or collect small amounts of cash. The incumbent has very little input into the annual budget.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR HUMAN RESOURCES:

The incumbents responsibility for Human Resources:

The incumbent is responsible as a group/work leader. He/She is responsible for providing direction and checking results but generally works along with those supervised.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The incumbents work environment is typically in a kitchen in a ministry/social service facility.

The incumbent work under the following disagreeable conditions:

Dealing with angry people

Verbal abuse

Hot/Steamy environment

Noisy

Crowded in some cases

Pressure with timelines

Cuts Burns and entering freezers.

The incumbent is required to travel up to 30% of time.

EXPOSURE TO HAZARDS:

The job incumbent may be exposed to the risk of minor to moderate injury or illnesses due to the following:

Physical attacks by others (verbal)

Exposure to toxic chemicals

Moving objects

Sharp objects

Electrical hazards

Injury from lifting

Falling on wet/slippery floors

Cuts Burns and entering freezers

PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES:

The incumbent must take the following precautionary measures (in additions to health and safety rules):

Universal Precautions

Use of rubber mats

Use coats to go into freezers

Use gloves provided

Immunization for Hepatitis B

Vaccination against Tuberculosis

Qualifications:

Completed Secondary School

One to three years of prior related experience with at least one year of institutional cooking experience.

Food handling certificate

Knowledge of Canada Food Guide

Good working knowledge of English language

Good interpersonal skills

Good organizational skills

Able to work with and facilitate volunteers

Valid First Aid/CPR certificate

WHMIS certificate

Ability to demonstrate a supportive respectful and non-judgmental approach to clients

Provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army in its sole discretion is required. The screening is secured either through the national Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment.

Valid Ontario Class G drivers license a current original copy of drivers abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army in its sole discretion is required

Support for and an understanding of the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada.

Conditions of Employment:

Normal location of work is at 750 Redwood Square Oakville ON L6L 6X7

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $19.34 to $19.76 with a maximum of $20.17.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions internal equity and candidate experience skills and qualifications relevant to the role.
