Youre an exceptional leader who can manage complex operations independently; navigate ethical and legal considerations to tight deadlines; and support assignment and programming teams in an unrelenting news environment. You are a decisive leader who can act independently under pressure. At the same time you prioritize deep collaboration with colleagues in the Toronto Broadcast Centre and across the country to deliver relevant stories and compelling formats urgently and efficiently.
In this role youll be on the ground with weekend programming teams driving live and daily news coverage co-ordination and distribution across CBC News Network digital streaming social and CBC Radio One newscasts and national call-in programs.
You know how to build a respectful culture where teams are motivated to support each other producing impactful journalism that prioritizes live and breaking news that resonates with all Canadians. You are a collaborator who can wear many hats equally adept at pivoting for live programming as you are at evolving workflows and supporting staff under pressure. You expertly navigate daily digital streaming broadcast and social platforms and help to prioritize
the relentless demands for teams who deliver the highest quality audio video and text coverage. Youll work with colleagues across the CBC News division sharing both content and expertise across platforms and programs..
In this role you are the first stop for teams around legal issues and questions involving the CBCs Journalistic Standards and Practices ensuring theyre providing fair balanced accurate thoughtful and immediate coverage.
You support executive producers senior producers and assignment leaders in managing budgets resource allocation and ensuring the mental and physical well-being of your teams is front-and-centre.
You work closely with other managing editors to ensure CBC News delivers on its mission to provide seamless live breaking and daily coverage 24/7.

As a top-tier leader youll be front and centre in fulfilling the CBC News mission by driving journalism innovation and this role youll:
Lead with Impact: Bring your A-game everyday guiding and inspiring a talented team of journalists and directing editorial and audience growth strategy on all collaboration with the Head of Live and Daily News Managing Editors Executive and Senior Producers you oversee the weekend news strategy for live and daily coverage of national and international stories and major events.
Champion Audience Growth: Focus editorial decisions on expanding our reach particularly to new and younger news consumers and to deepen our engagement with all Canadians. You understand the pulse of Canadian audiences and their habits and translate insights and data into actionable content strategies for all platforms.
Mentor & Develop: Provide strong editorial leadership offering clear direction
constructive feedback and growth opportunities to a large team of journalists. You cultivate a high-performing collaborative and respectful work culture where everyone feels empowered to contribute. You ensure your team has the skills tools and training to adapt quickly and provide ongoing coaching and mentorship to support them through rapid change.
Foster Authentic Storytelling: Champion content that truly reflects the richness and diversity of perspectives ideas and experiences in Canada. You inspire your team to think inclusively always asking whose voice is missing and you work diligently to close that gap. You collaborate with journalistic leaders across CBC News ensuring our daily coverage is reflective of the stories and issues that help Canadians make sense of their world.
Uphold Journalistic Excellence: Ensure all content adheres to CBC's rigorous Journalistic Standards and Practices navigating complex ethical and legal considerations with grace and precision.
Resource Management: Manage budgets allocate resources effectively and co-ordinate technical and production requirements for coverage.
Innovate & Strategize: Demonstrate daily the role of a public broadcaster in a media landscape proliferated with misinformation disinformation and rapidly evolving technologies. Verification is a core value. You lean into data and use it to drive audience-focused strategies for your team. You translate big ideas into tangible actions.
Were looking for someone who:
Has at least eight to 10 years of recent significant leadership experience in a fast-paced news environment particularly in roles involving breaking news live programming and overseeing large teams in a unionized environment.
Experience with risk assessment and management is a requirement.
Demonstrates exceptional critical thinking news judgement and a deep knowledge of the legal and ethical issues in journalism.
Has demonstrated experience in implementing live and breaking news coverage plans across streaming digital and broadcast platforms from the initial alert to sustained coverage as the story evolves.
Is an astute strategist capable of translating audience insights and data into effective content decisions and programming results that meet the evolving needs of Canadian news consumers.
Possesses proven ability to find solutions to a variety of technical resource and operational issues to make decisions to tight deadlines; and to handle multiple priorities while juggling tasks and/or projects.
Has strong coaching and mentorship skills with a track record of recruiting and developing talent and fostering a positive inclusive and equitable work environment.
Is comfortable navigating rapid change troubleshooting complex situations and making swift decisions under pressure.
Brings a deep and nuanced understanding of national and international politics world events geography and history coupled with strong cultural awareness and sensitivity.
Exhibits stellar communication and collaboration skills essential for working across diverse teams and regions.
Has a university degree or equivalent professional experience.
Is flexible to work varying hours on short notice including early mornings nights and holidays to respond to the demands of a live programming cycle.
This is a permanent full-time position based in Toronto. Working Saturday and Sunday is a requirement however there is scheduling flexibility. While you are expected to be on- site most days there is opportunity for hybrid work on occasion.
