Job Summary

We have an opening for a Mechanical Technician or a Mechanical Technologist for the Equipment and Technical Support Team within the Center for Micro and Nano Technology (CMNT). This position requires the ability to secure and maintain a DOE Q clearance. You will provide technical support for repair installation maintenance and operation of systems and equipment in support of research and development activities. You will frequently be working on microfabrication equipment in a class 100 cleanroom and supporting laboratories including bio labs. This position will support the Materials Engineering Division (MED) within the Engineering Directorate.

This position requires full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the work.

This position will be filled at either level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

In this role you will: 

  • Provide basic electrical and mechanical support for the setup maintenance troubleshooting repair installation removal and decommission of electro-mechanical equipment for photolithography thin film deposition plasma etching wet chemical processing metrology and other semiconductor and supporting processes.
  • Work with hand tools and machine tools along with chemical systems and hazardous waste.
  • Work in a Class 100 cleanroom environment laser labs and Bio Safety Laboratory level 2 (BSL2).
  • Perform maintenance of toxic gas systems under close supervision.
  • Participate in tracking component inventory.
  • Work in a fast-paced environment with many simultaneous tasks/responsibilities and occasional priority pivots.
  • Follow written/verbal operational and safety procedures and maintain a safe clean and functional laboratory environment.
  • Clearly document problems progress and solutions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities at the 533.2 Level:

  • Design and fabricate moderately complex mechanical or electrical components and systems working independently on well understood tasks.
  • Maintain moderately complex vacuum systems.
  • Work effectively in a multidisciplinary environment with team members customers service providers and vendors.

Qualifications :

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
  • Associate degree in either engineering vacuum electronic or mechanical technology or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Basic understanding of mechanical or electrical hardware and tools. 
  • Basic ability to troubleshoot mechanical or electrical equipment.
  • Basic ability to interpret mechanical and electrical drawings.
  • Knowledge of office computer software including word processing and spreadsheets necessary to produce documentation and graphics.  
  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary team environment and demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills.

Additional Qualifications at the 533.2 Level

  • Experience operating mechanical or electrical hardware and tools. 
  • Intermediate ability to interpret mechanical and electrical drawings.
  • Intermediate skills in identifying and troubleshooting moderately complex mechanical and electrical problems with the ability to suggest and implement solutions. 
  • Experience making independent decisions towards resolving a variety of moderately complex technical problems.
  • Ability to create/write general procedures sketches and drawings.

Qualifications We Desire: 

  • Experience with toxic gas systems.
  • Experience with vacuum systems.
  • Experience with machining.
  • Experience with programmable logic controllers (PLC).
  • Experience in welding.
  • Microfabrication experience.
  • Cleanroom operations experience.

Pay Range

$34.85 - $53.36 Hourly

$34.85 - $42.68 Hourly for the 533.1 Level

$43.55 - $53.36 Hourly for the 533.2 Level

This is the lowest to highest salary in good faith we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. Pay will not be below any applicable local minimum wage.  An employees position within the salary range will be based on several factors including but not limited to specific competencies relevant education qualifications certifications experience skills seniority geographic location performance and business or organizational needs.
