What Youll Do

The Assistant Controller will assist in overseeing the day-to-day accounting and financial operations of the organization and tax credit entities. This position supports accurate and timely financial reporting ensuring compliance with internal policies Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and any specific non-profit regulatory requirements. The Assistant Controller will collaborate with various departments to support budget management grant reporting and financial analysis to ensure the organization meets its mission effectively. The Assistant Controller will supervise the Accounting Manager and Staff Accountants.


Note:This is a hybrid position with a certain percentage of time spent working remotely and a certain percentage of time spent working out of a YWCA office.

Expectations of your role:

    • Accounting Operations:
    • Oversee all general ledger activities including month-end closing ensuring accuracy and timely reconciliation of accounts.
    • Oversee year-end closing to ensure proper cut-off and classification of expenses journal entries and accruals to ensure a clean annual audit.
    • Manage Fixed Asset system and ensure proper accounting for capital purchases.
    • Supervise Accounting Team to ensure appropriate internal controls and procedures are in place.
    • Responsible for development of accounting policies & procedures.
    • Comply with local state and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings. Responds to inquiries from local state and federal authorities.
    • Make recommendations for system improvements. Participate in the vendor selection of new systems.
    • Assist in tracking reporting and ensuring compliance with grants and restricted funds.
    • Work closely with program and development teams to ensure grant and donor requirements are met in financial reporting.
    • Ensure accurate and timely expense allocations in line with grant budgets and restrictions.

    • Financial Reporting & Analysis:
    • Assist with monthly quarterly and annual financial reporting processes for YWCA & Tax Credit Entities.
    • Prepare and analyze financial statements ensuring compliance with GAAP and specific non-profit accounting standards.
    • Assist in preparing reports for the Board of Directors senior management and other stakeholders.
    • Support Controller & CFO in special projects and initiatives as needed.

    • Internal Controls & Compliance:
    • Support the Controller in maintaining and enhancing internal control policies and procedures.
    • Ensure compliance with all federal state and local regulations as well as non-profit-specific requirements contract requirements and debt covenants.
    • Assist in preparing for and coordinating external audits ensuring that financial data and reports meet auditor requirements.

    • Budgeting & Forecasting:
    • Support the Controller and CFO in the development and monitoring of budgets.
    • Assist in preparing forecasts analyzing variances and providing insights to guide financial decision-making.
    • Collaborate with departments to ensure budget adherence and proper expense allocations.

    • Leadership and Team Management:
    • Lead and mentor the Accounting Manager & Staff Accounting Team ensuring professional development and performance management.
    • Foster a collaborative and results-driven culture encouraging innovation and efficiency within the department.
    • Engage cross-functionally with other departments to provide financial insights and support organizational goals.

    • Race and Social Justice:

    • Participate and provide leadership in various ways for the agencys Social Justice Initiative.
    • Support the YWCAs Social Justice Initiative by understanding how racism sexism classism and other oppressions play out in institutions and systems.
    • Use the lens of social justice to review policies and procedures.
    • Shows demonstrated ability to interact with people of different cultures.

Must haves to be successful:

    • Bachelors degree in accounting Finance or a related field. CPA or equivalent is preferred.
    • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in accounting or finance; non-profit accounting experience is strongly preferred.
    • Excellent organizational skills & attention to detail.
    • Proficiency in accounting software (experience with non-profit accounting systems preferred e.g. Oracle Sage Intacct).
    • Strong Excel and analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to work with complex spreadsheets.
    • Effective communication skills with the ability to explain financial information to non-financial stakeholders.
    • Knowledge of GAAP and FASB standards specific to non-profits.

Hours Rate and Benefits

    • Annualized Salary Range: $135000 - $145000

    • At the time of hire employees may enroll voluntarily in the Fidelity 403b Plan
    • After two years of employment employees are eligible to participate in the YWCA Retirement Fund
