Primary Purpose:

Responsible for appraising the health needs of the school community by providing a safe and healthy environment and promoting good health practices among the school community.

Qualifications:

Education and Certification

  • Graduate of an accredited professional nursing education program
  • Valid registered nurse license to practice from the Texas State Board of Nurse Examiners
  • American Heart Association/Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers Certification
  • American Heart Association/Basic Life Support for Healthcare Instructor Certification within first year of hire
  • Certified by Texas Department of Health to conduct vision hearing Type II Diabetes Risk
  • Assessment and Postural screenings or required upon hiring

Experience

  • Two (2) years of nursing experience preferably in medical/surgical experience

Knowledge and Skills

  • Comprehensive knowledge and application of nursing standards as defined by the Texas Nurse Practice Act
  • Comprehensive knowledge of national state and local student health requirements
  • Advanced organizational interpersonal verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrate professionalism ethical conduct and accountability in all interactions and responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities:

Direct Student Health Care

  • Provide direct care utilizing professional assessment skills the nursing process and established school health protocols.
  • Notify parents of accidents or illnesses and secure medical care for students in emergency cases.
  • Assess student health problems and make appropriate referrals working with students teachers parents campus administration and medical and health care professionals as needed.
  • Provide health counseling and instruction to individual students as appropriate.

Medication and Treatment Administration

  • Coordinate management systems to administer medications and treatments to students at school according to district policy procedures and the Texas Nurse Practice Act.
  • Train designated school personnel in clinic procedures including administration of medications and emergency procedures if the nurse is not available in accordance with district policy.

Health Screenings and Compliance

  • Establish and implement effective procedures for completing mandatory screening programs and referrals as indicated.
  • Review and maintain immunization records notify parents of needed immunizations and follow up with delinquencies.
  • Maintain state-required certifications in AHA/BLS and as a health screener in vision hearing Type II Diabetes Risk assessment and Postural screening.

Collaboration and Communication

  • Serve as a health advocate for students their families and staff.
  • Serve as a health liaison between school physicians parents and the community.
  • Communicate and report regularly with campus/district administration the Director of Health Services school counselors teachers parents food services and other staff as appropriate regarding health service issues and/or potential health and safety hazards in compliance with HIPAA and FERPA.
  • Collaborate with campus administration and staff to identify and address campus health needs and provide health education/training to individuals and groups.
  • Collaborate and participate in Individual Education Plan (IEP) Committees and Section 504 Committees with other professionals regarding implementation of health-related Individual Education Plans (IEP) and Individual Health Plans.

Emergency Response and Safety

  • Participate in the building emergency response team and other school/district committees as requested by campus administration.
  • Participate in the assessment and reporting of suspected child abuse.

Administrative and Compliance Responsibilities

  • Compile maintain and file all physical and computerized reports records and other documents required including clinic records and accurate updated health records on all students.
  • Requisition supplies and equipment needed to maintain clinic inventory.
  • Comply with all policies and procedures established by federal and state laws Texas Department of Health rules State Board of Education Texas Nurse Practice Act and campus/district policies or procedures in health services.
  • Maintain nursing license and complete continuing education to stay updated on current practices.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Participate in professional development department meetings and special events as assigned.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support the mission and goals of the campus.

Tools and Equipment Used: Standard medical clinic equipment including automated external defibrillator (AED); special needs adaptive equipment; standard office equipment including computer and peripherals

Posture: Frequent standing sitting kneeling/squatting bending/stooping pushing pulling and twisting

Motion: Frequent walking grasping/squeezing wrist flexion/extension

Lifting: Frequent light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may require regular heavy lifting (45 pounds or more) and position of students with physical disabilities; controlling behavior through physical restraint assisting nonambulatory students

Environment: Exposure to biological hazards bacteria and communicable diseases; Frequent district-wide and occasional statewide travel

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress
