Your role and responsibilities

As a Highway Assessment Engineer your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing a team to complete regular highway safety inspections on time and to high standards in line with Suffolk County Councils statutory duty.
  • Maintaining a customer-focused approach ensuring that both you and your team carry out ad-hoc safety inspections of the highway and update customers on all outcomes.
  • Ensuring that reactive maintenance repairs are completed in accordance with statutory duties and the term maintenance contract.
  • Taking an asset management approach when commissioning small-scale maintenance works and reporting to asset managers to prevent deterioration of highway assets.
  • Assisting in the use of AI technology to survey the condition of the highway while helping develop new processes to enhance its effectiveness.

You will need

  • Experience of highway maintenance materials and techniques and sound awareness of highway maintenance standards and asset management.
  • Good knowledge of relevant policy codes of practice design and construction standards for highway maintenance.
  • Experience in managing a team with the ability to determine appropriate priorities in the long term and a day-by-day basis to meet timescales.
  • To be able to adapt to innovation and be able to turn you hand to new techniques and technologies with a proficiency in using software systems.

The team

Suffolk Highways is a collaboration between Suffolk County Council and private sector service providers aimed at maintaining roads and delivering new highway infrastructure across Suffolk. This role is within the Highways & Assessment Team of Infrastructure Management. You will be part of a team of three managing a 21-strong group of highway assessment officers.

The broader Infrastructure Management team consists of approximately 120 staff responsible for influencing and embedding highway asset management strategies commissioning annual works programmes and ensuring the safety of the highway network for both residents and visitors to Suffolk.
