Overview
The Field Services Technician will support data center operations through installation troubleshooting maintenance and decommissioning activities. This role requires extensive hands-on experience with cabling hardware power systems optical testing and remote hands support. Technicians must confidently interpret MOPs engineering documents and network diagrams while adhering to safety standards and customer quality expectations.
Key Responsibilities
Break-Fix Support
- Must work outside standard business hours when required (nights/weekends).
- Provide rapid response to on-site hardware and network failures.
Remote Hands
- Execute installation and testing following MOPs and technical documentation.
- Assist with data center wireline and IP transport operations.
- Interpret engineering letters diagrams and vendor docs.
- Identify color codes for telecom cabling and equipment indicators.
Cabling
- Work overhead pulling heavy cable for extended durations.
- Install/troubleshoot Ethernet and fiber cables (CAT5/CAT6 structured cabling SM/MM fiber RJ45 LC connectors).
Optical Testing & Troubleshooting
- Install route lace terminate label and test Ethernet switchboard fiber and power cables.
- Utilize optical tools:
- Optical power meter
- OTDR
- VFL
- Stabilized light source
- Test circuits (10G/100G) using:
- BERT
- RFC 2544
- EtherSAM (Y.1564)
- iPerf (110G)
- Resolve network issues and assist with card-level troubleshooting.
Site Audits
- Review project specs to validate equipment placement and cable routing.
- Document findings in proprietary systems.
- Provide timely feedback to audit requests.
Racking and Stacking
- Install and maintain data center equipment in racks.
- Use hand and power tools safely.
- Follow mechanical installation specifications and SOPs.
Decommissioning
- Safely remove outdated hardware.
- Follow data destruction and disposal protocols.
Hardware Replacement
- Replace transport routers servers switches and network/IT components.
Power Management
- Work with AC/DC power feeds redundancy systems ATS and hot/cold aisle layouts.
Documentation
- Interpret installation cut-sheets for proper port assignment and cable management.
AC/DC Power Equipment Maintenance
- Troubleshoot and maintain power distribution systems.
Qualifications
Experience (Minimum 5 Years Each)
- Data center technician or similar environment.
- Customer-facing roles.
- Handling live hardware rack building and installing data center equipment.
- Reading cutsheets for physical network design.
- Working with power feeds redundancy ATS cabling switches servers and troubleshooting.
Soft Skills
- Highly desired: Telecommunications field technician or Optical Engineer experience.
- Selfstarter able to work independently.
- Strong interpersonal and team collaboration skills.
- Excellent organizational administrative written and verbal communication.
- Ability to multitask in fastpaced environments.
- Knowledge of common safety standards.
- Coordinate with multiple teams/departments as needed.
- Use Hyperscale systems for customer communication.
- Maintain quality per Hyperscale standards.
