QUALIFICATIONS:
1. High School diploma or GED Certificate or demonstrated progress toward obtaining a GED as required by Kentucky Law.
2. Two years experience in general automotive repair.
3. Valid Kentucky Commercial Drivers License and school bus certificate.
4. Course work toward ASE Certification.
REPORTS TO: Head Mechanic; Director of Transportation
JOB GOAL: Perform mechanical repair work on school buses trucks and other gas and diesel powered automotive equipment; perform body repairs gas or diesel engine overhauls transmission overhauls and electrical systems repairs as needed
1.0 GENERAL KNOWLEDGE BASE Knowledge Of:
1.1 Principles of gasoline and diesel-powered internal combustion engines.
1.2 Methods tools equipment and materials used in diagnosis repair and maintenance of motorized equipment.
1.3 Shop math applicable to vehicle maintenance.
1.4 Proper lifting techniques.
1.5 Health and safety regulations and procedures.
1.6 Use of service manuals.
2.0 ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Ability To:
2.1 Perform mechanical repair work on school buses trucks and other gas and diesel powered automotive equipment.
2.2 Analyze combustible engine failure by using electronic test equipment.
2.3 Pass required certification comprehension and aptitude exams.
2.4 Diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical malfunction and defects.
2.5 Operate shop equipment and tools including electronic testing equipment welders and lathes.
2.6 Make major and minor repairs.
2.7 Read and use mechanical diagrams repair manuals and parts catalog.
2.8 Maintain routine records.
2.9 Plan and organize work.
2.10 Understand and follow oral and written directions.
2.11 Work cooperatively with others.
2.12 Lift heavy objects.
2.13 Observe legal and defensive driving practices.
3.0 Performance Responsibilities
3.1 Disassemble motors and repair adjust and replace parts; recondition and adjust ignition and carburetor systems; tune engines including injectors and generators; repair fit and adjust valves pistons rings and bearings; clean repair and replace carburetors fuel pumps fuel lines gauges and electrical wiring systems.
3.2 Perform major mechanical repairs; overhaul transmissions differentials and universal joints; repair adjust and line brakes; rebuild and replace air and hydraulic brake system components; perform front-end alignment and repair.
3.3 Perform mechanical repair work on school buses and other gas or diesel-powered automotive equipment; assure buses conform with established standards for passenger vehicles; complete related maintenance records.
3.4 Inspect and diagnose mechanical defects in school buses trucks automobiles vans tractors electric carts and other mechanical equipment; drive and test school buses and provide emergency road service to disabled District school buses and vehicles as required
3.5 Read and interpret schematics and diagrams; diagnose and repair mechanical defects in a variety of vehicles.
3.6 Repair and replace alternators generators starters voltage regulators distributors and lighting systems; install a variety of parts including batteries brakes glass and door handles.
3.7 Grind valves and perform welding; rebuild equipment as needed.
3.8 Operate a variety of equipment and machinery including electronic and mechanical diagnostic equipment scopes tire changers grinders lathes emissions analyzer steam cleaner hoists jacks torches and welding equipment and a variety of power and hand tools.
3.9 Conduct periodical mechanical safety checks on buses as mandated by law; test vehicles for compliance with exhaust emissions standards.
3.10 Respond to service calls and perform emergency repairs as needed.
3.11 Perform lubrication oil changes battery maintenance tire changes and servicing of equipment.
3.12 Process work orders and maintain records of time worked and materials used; recommend purchase of needed parts supplies and tools.
3.13 Maintain work area equipment and tools in a safe clean and orderly condition.
3.14 Perform related duties as assigned.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 1. Number of days is according to contract which includes six paid holidays instructional days and training and work days as needed. 2. Salary commensurate with adopted classified personnel salary schedule. 3. Sick leave and personal day as stated in Board policy. 4. The employee is an at will employee and the superintendent may terminate this employee at any time.
