Description of Work

Individuals in this class perform conventional responsible work on board U.S. Coast Guard certified vessels. Assessment of work is accomplished under the supervision of the Able-Bodied Seaman and Ferry Master on the basis of safety in relation to the directing loading and unloading of passengers and vehicles off and on the ferries. Other duties include the maintenance of deck electrical/mechanical equipment and passenger facilities. Employee is responsible for enforcing safety and security regulations as outlined by the U.S. Coast Guard regulations. Employees may perform shore duties and all other duties as assigned.

Job Duties include but not limited to:

Assists the Able Seaman (Ferry Crewman II) in the directing of the parking of trucks automobiles and trailers on the deck to ensure proper weight distribution on the vessel; chocks wheels to prevent vehicle movement while underway.
Patrols deck area while underway to maintain discipline and order and prevent passengers from entering unauthorized areas and from sitting on side rails or standing in dangerous areas.
Converses with traveling public and answers questions that might arise in regard to surrounding areas and other travel related questions.
Observes passengers for suspicious actions and behavior and reports any activities to the Vessel Security Officer (VSO) and the ferry captain in accordance with Homeland Security guidelines.
Assists the crew in securing the vessel in case of fire breakdowns or inclement weather; assists maintenance crews in repairing the vessel when in dry dock.
Performs related duties as required.


This position works from the Cherry Branch Operations and works shift work - 7 days on and 7 days off.

A VALID COPY OF BOTH TWIC AND USCG ORDINARY SEAMAN MERCHANT MARINERS CREDENTIAL INCLUDING A CURRENT MEDICAL CARD ISSUED BY THE USCG MUST BE PRESENTED AT THE INTERVIEW PROCESS.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC01 - $31200 - $46991

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Knowledge of basic seamanship knowledge and terms such as marlinspike helm commands and shipboard terms.
  • Knowledge of basic firefighting principles with regards to different classes of fires how to extinguish them and proper fire hose handling techniques.
  • Experience in launching and operation of a rescue boat and recovering an unconscious person from the water.
  • Experience in personal Survival Techniques and Personal Safety/Social Responsibility.
  • Demonstrate thorough practical performance in the proper technique for removing a portable fire extinguisher from the bracket and carrying it to the location of the fire and properly discharging to extinguish the fire.

Minimum Education and Experience

Possession of a valid Ordinary Seaman Certificate issued by the US Coast Guard. Necessary Special Qualifications Possession of a Transportation Worker Identification Credential Card (TWIC) issued by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
