Lower School Librarian

University School of Nashville (USN) invites qualified candidates to submit an application for the position of Lower School Librarian. This is a full-time exempt position as part of the Hassenfeld Library team to begin in August 2026. The Lower School Librarian will create and manage a robust Lower School library program that teaches information literacy skills in support of the classroom curriculum through dedicated library classes and promotes a lifelong love of reading and learning. This position sees 20 different classes each week in grades K-4 and also participates as a member of the library team and the Lower School division. Together with the LS Assistant Librarian this position is responsible for maintaining and developing the library collection for LS students both print and digital as well as planning and running events with the library team including author/illustrator visits and community outreach programs.

The Hassenfeld Library is a 20000-square-foot facility serving students and faculty from kindergarten through twelfth grade. Its nearly 30000 volumes numerous study areas multiple technology access points archives and specialized instructional spaces complement a large central reading room. The Hassenfeld Librarys centerpiece location on campus makes it a popular gathering and programming space for the entire school community with noise levels that ebb and flow throughout the day.

The School

University School of Nashville is an independent non-sectarian co-educational day school with enrollment of over 1000 students in kindergarten through twelfth 1915 the George Peabody College for Teachers opened Peabody Demonstration School (PDS) USNs predecessor which earned acclaim for its curriculum and 1974 Peabody College announced plans to close PDS and a group of parents alumni students and teachers reconstituted and re-chartered the school as University School of Nashville.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Teaches a regular schedule of 20 classes each week to grades K-4 focused on information literacy literature appreciation and research skills
  • Collaborates with Lower School faculty to support the curriculum through dedicated library classes
  • Differentiates instruction to meet the needs of various learning styles and needs of students at appropriately challenging levels
  • Supports classroom community using Responsive Classroom and social-emotional learning strategies
  • Develops plans and runs an author/illustrator visit program for the Lower School
  • Creates opportunities for parents and faculty to actively participate in the Lower School library program
  • Coordinates with LS Assistant Librarian to manage circulation and collection development
  • Participate fully as a member of the library team a member of the Lower School division and in the life of the school community
  • Performs other duties as determined by the Library Director and Lower School Division Head

Qualifications and Experience

  • Masters of Library Science (MLS) or verified enrollment in a graduate-level ALA-accredited program of Library Science with a teaching certificate or school librarian endorsement strongly preferred
  • Minimum of three years of experience teaching at the elementary level
  • Experience with a diverse school community
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and passion for childrens literature
  • Proficiency with library technology and multimedia tools including LibGuides
  • Knowledge of Responsive Classroom preferred
