The Opportunity

Our Product & Innovation team are looking for a Laboratory Technician to join the team based in Port Kembla. The Product & Innovation team conducts exciting research into emerging technologies to develop new or improved products.  They deliver enhancements to the beauty functionality and performance of BlueScopes range including products such as COLORBOND steel.

In this exciting opportunity you will be joining an already established team that are developing new coated product and process concepts for our customers now and into the this highly technical role you will conduct laboratory experiments and generate prototypes to assist in the delivery of breakthrough improvement outcomes. Through extensive evaluation and analysis of results you will then present your findings and recommendations back to your Innovation project colleagues and collaboratively develop follow-up investigations.

 This opportunity is a 12-month Fixed Term Contract (maternity leave cover)

What Will You Do

 Being part of a highly collaborative project team you will be responsible for:

  • product planning: procure organise and prepare the materials necessary for prototyping
  • product development: assist in the production of prototype materials including using existing lab coating procedures and newly developed coating processes
  • analysis: conduct physical performance assessments of coated products and support the  surface treatments program
  • collaboration and support: contribute to the ongoing support and development of products that exceed the ever-increasing expectations of our customers
  • innovation and change: assess and analyse data to identify areas for potential improvement

More About You

With your continuous strive for quality and innovation you will combine your hands-on laboratory experience and your ability to analyse and interpret technical data. You will also have:

  • a degree or diploma qualification in engineering or sciences (material chemistry physics)
  • knowledge of laboratory operations including safety and quality control
  • an understanding of product design and process capability
  • Experience in instrumental analytics eg FTIR XRF SEM etc. of coatings for corrosion resistance of metallic-coatings and alloys.
  • Experience in laboratory assessment for proof of concept prototyping.
  • an ability to collaborate with other departments and colleagues to develop innovative improved products for our customers
  • the ability to present and communicate your results and participate in debate with your peers
