It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention protection and preparation as well as the care custody and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody healthcare and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration Health Services Rehabilitation & Reentry Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters!

Description of Work

Reporting to a Correctional Sergeant III at a multi-custody male correctional facility this position provides first line supervision to offenders and will be working on the Therapeutic Diversion Unit (TDU) managing offenders with special needs. Job responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to the following:

1. Ensuring the care custody and control of offenders.

2. Touring assigned areas which will require periodically climbing stairs and standing for long periods of time.

3. Observing offenders activity in person and on closed circuit monitors and monitoring and regulating offenders and staff movement.

4. Identifying offenders who have been behavioral medical or other problems so that appropriate safety and security measures may be taken

5. Performing general security duties to prevent escape disorder rule infractions and harm to offenders visitors and staff.

6. Searching offenders visitors cells and other areas for weapons and contraband.

7. Maintaining and recording offender counts cell assignments and other pertinent information.

8. Escorting offenders within and outside the Institution using and maintaining keys and other equipment; and supervising offender work details.

9. Adhering to the Department of Adult Correction Correctional Officer appearance and grooming policy standard.

10. Specific duties vary by post assignment and shift assignments will be made based on operational needs.


(Salary Range: $41558 - $54078)

Management Preferences

  • Preference will be given to candidates with one (1) year experience working with a special population such as Mentally Ill or Developmentally Disabled Offenders.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) withState Benefits. The selected candidate may be selected to work any shift and will work weekends and holidays to ensure 24/7 staff coverage.

The salary grade for this position is CR07. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as or lower than their current position. If selected for this position a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience funding availability and internal equity. Based upon these factors a pay increase MAY result.

About Central Prison:

Central Prison in Raleigh NC has been in continuous service since 1884. It serves as the admission point into prison for adult male felons sentenced to 20 years or more and is the main medical and mental health center for male offenders. It also houses special populations including death row and safe-keepers.


While security requires that certain offenders remain in their cells there are more than 260 offender job assignments that include working in the kitchen laundry or canteen. Offenders also work as barbers janitors and clerks. Offenders can attend substance abuse group therapy meetings Bible studies or worship services.

Minimum Education and Experience

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma AND two years of experience as a Correctional Officer; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Minimum Education and Experience for a Trainee Appointment: High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications: Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.
