The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention protection and preparation as well as the care custody and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody healthcare and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Description of Work
Reporting to a Correctional Sergeant III at a multi-custody male correctional facility this position provides first line supervision to offenders and will be working on the Therapeutic Diversion Unit (TDU) managing offenders with special needs. Management Preferences
Preference will be given to candidates with one (1) year experience working with a special population such as Mentally Ill or Developmentally Disabled Offenders.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) withState Benefits. The selected candidate may be selected to work any shift and will work weekends and holidays to ensure 24/7 staff coverage.

The salary grade for this position is CR07. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as or lower than their current position. If selected for this position a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience funding availability and internal equity. Based upon these factors a pay increase MAY result.
About Central Prison:
Central Prison in Raleigh NC has been in continuous service since 1884. It serves as the admission point into prison for adult male felons sentenced to 20 years or more and is the main medical and mental health center for male offenders. It also houses special populations including death row and safe-keepers.
While security requires that certain offenders remain in their cells there are more than 260 offender job assignments that include working in the kitchen laundry or canteen. Offenders also work as barbers janitors and clerks. Offenders can attend substance abuse group therapy meetings Bible studies or worship services.

Minimum Education and Experience

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma AND two years of experience as a Correctional Officer; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Minimum Education and Experience for a Trainee Appointment: High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualifications: Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.
