Position Summary:
Childrens Education is seeking a School and Out-of-School Educator to assist with two middle and high school enrichment initiatives. The Assistant will support programs with the Coordinator of School and Out of School Programs for:
- GEAR UP High School (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs): (10 Days)
- Eight (8) School-Time Career Discovery Days at NYBG Days
- One (1) 2-Day Spring Recess Science workshops
- CASA Middle School (Cultural After School Adventures): (26 Days)
- Two (2) NYBG Field Trips
- 8-Week (24 days) afterschool workshops
- NYCPS High School Summer Recess Green Career Connections (10 Days)
- (1) Two-Week High School Summer Institute for 10th - 12th grade
- NYBG Middle School Field Science Camp (15 Days)
- (1) Three-Week Middle School Summer Field Camp for 7th - 8th grade
The Assistant Educator will support the coordinator in executing a curriculum that engages students in phenomena-based inquiry learning about NYBGs mission focused on its work in improving the Bronx River Watershed. This includes culturally responsive activities that explore the Garden landscape and its conservation efforts.
The Assistant Educator will support immersive activities in Plant Science and Conservation Horticulture and Education connecting students with Garden professionals to link science to everyday life and possible career paths.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
- Support learning experiences and assist workshops including gathering setting up and maintaining supplies and teaching facility and cleaning up after programming
- Collaborate on program needs with Coordinator.
- Document GEAR UP program for institutional memory by taking photos while programs are in session and organizing them on TEAMS
- Reflect on practices and participate in a professional learning community to enhance science teaching in both garden and classroom settings.
- Travel to CASA partner school and help transport supplies/materials.
Qualifications:
- Potential candidates must have an undergraduate degree with experience in informal outdoor or museum education. Strong science (ecology botany or horticulture) background required.
- Familiarity with Next Generation Science Standards and three-dimensional principles of instruction.
- Excellent oral communication skills are required. Strong organizational skills the ability to make decisions and work independently and part of team required.
- Ability to work in all weather conditions and to be flexible and responsive in a complex dynamic and fast-paced environment.
- Prior experience engaging and sparking wonder and curiosity with teen audiences.
- Flexible planning hours; must be available for all program dates:
- TOTAL POSITION HOURS: 654
- GEAR UP: 94 hours
- CASA: 157 hours
- NYCPS 157 hours
- NYBG: 236 hours
Physical Demands & Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this position the employee is required to at minimum (for example: stand; walk; sit; use hands handle tools use motorized/heavy equipment climb ladders reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop kneel crouch or crawl. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Work outdoors under a variety of weather conditions. Work under low moderate or loud work conditions)
