This National Guard position is for a SHEET METAL MECHANIC (AIRCRAFT) (Title 32) Position Description Number Dand is part of the IL 182 AW National Guard.


Duties

As a SHEET METAL MECHANIC (AIRCRAFT) (Title 32) WG-3806-5/8/10 you will accomplish the inspection repair modification installation and troubleshooting of sheet metal fiberglass bonded honeycomb and other structural materials and components as well as treatment (i.e. mechanical and chemical) and painting of missiles aircraft powered and nonpowered Aerospace Ground Equipment (AGE) and monitoring aircraft and equipment washing.

Major Duties - This is NOT an all-inclusive list:

  • Inspect aircraft and determine the nature and extent of structural repairs using applicable technical orders.
  • Repair cracks in aircraft skin fabricate and fit patches and seal structures to ensure pressure water and weather tightness.
  • Troubleshoot structural repair situations on fuselage tails wings cowlings and stabilizers using hand and powered tools.
  • Inspect damage or deterioration and determine repair or replacement of plastic fiberglass composites bonded structures and honeycomb assemblies.
  • Remove corrosion using mechanical and chemical procedures and treat metals with appropriate chemical processes.
  • Work from blueprints technical orders diagrams and work orders to perform fabrication repair and installation tasks.
  • Determine shear and bearing load factors to perform correct rivet replacement using technical guidance.
  • Prepare and design layouts dies jigs and templates required to carry out fabrication repair and modification of aircraft and equipment.
  • Identify metal corrosion perform testing to determine type and apply required treatment in accordance with technical publications.
  • Ensure all work assignments are completed in accordance with technical data applicable manuals and established procedures.
  • Manufacture and ensure metal tubing conduits and cables are fabricated and tested per drawings and specifications.
  • Perform fabrication of locally manufactured items involving layout bending cutting forming and assembling.
  • Devise and calculate patterns using principles of triangulation radial line development and parallel line development.
  • Prepare and design layout of parts and assemblies prior to fabrication or repair actions.
  • Align and balance component structures and airframes using levels measuring instruments and geometric layout principles.
  • Remove form fit and install skins and assemblies using hand or powered drilling and cutting tools and other metal-working equipment.
  • Install various types of aircraft rivets and fasteners using pneumatic riveters bucking bars and special tools.
  • Set up and operate power shears brakes rolls dimpling machines drill presses saws and portable powered tools.
  • Apply protective coatings markings and decals using spray equipment brushes and specialized applicators.
  • Use powered sanders buffers brushes grinders bead blasters and chemical agents to perform corrosion control.
  • Remove repair modify and install aircraft parts and assemblies such as frames stringers bulkheads ribs spars panels and access doors.
  • Remove damaged or broken fasteners and receptacles and replace them with correct aircraft fasteners.
  • Perform metal-to-metal bonding and repair delaminated surfaces and core materials in aircraft control surfaces.
  • Fit and trim components such as landing gear doors control surfaces flaps and access panels to ensure proper alignment.
  • Assist in training personnel perform wash-rack operations and support readiness exercises involving assembly or disassembly of components.

    • This is an excepted service position that requires membership in the Illinois National Guard and in the military grade listed in the announcement.     • Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform.
    • Acceptance of an excepted service position constitutes concurrence with these requirements as a condition of employment.

    • May be required to successfully complete a trial period.
    • This position is covered by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment (30 Sep 96) of the Gun Control Act (Lautenberg Amendment) of 1968. An individual convicted of a qualifying crime of domestic violence may not perform the duties of this position.
    • Irregular and/or overtime (compensatory) hours may be required to support operational requirements or contingencies or may be required to work hours outside of the normal duty day.
    • Participation in direct deposit is mandatory.
    • Must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance of the position.
    • Recruitment and relocation incentives may be available for this position.
    • Assignment to a compatible military position is not required for application but will be required if selected for appointment.
    • Indefinite position/temporary promotion/may become permanent.

    Qualifications

    AREA OF CONSIDERATION: The areas of consideration for this position Title 32 Excepted Service (32 U.S. Code 709) will be in the following manner and sequence:

    • The FIRST area of consideration for this position will be all excepted permanent and indefinite temporary technicians within the ILNG.
    • The SECOND area of consideration will be all current Federal Employees.
    • The THIRD area of consideration will be all Federal re-employment eligible.
    • The FOURTH area of consideration will be applicants willing to become T32 Dual Status Technicians and gain ILNG membership.
    • The FIFTH area of consideration will be U.S. Citizens.


    Military Grades: Enlisted Only - Minimum rank requirement of SSgt & May not exceed the rank of TSgt.

    SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: WG-10 Level - MUST possess specializedexperience or training in advanced planning layout and construction of sheet metal items involving irregular angles curves and complex development methods. Experience using more advanced shop tools and equipment such as slip-roll forming machines box-and-pan brakes crimpers and beading machines. Experience working with aircraft-grade metals and honeycomb structure. Experience applying complex shop mathematics pattern development and precision measurements to evaluate damage and perform high-tolerance fabrication and repair. WG-08 Level - MUST possess specializedexperience or training in planning layout and construction of sheet metal items with dovetailed set-in-bottom burred-bottom wired or lock seams. Experience using more complicated shop tools and powered equipment; experience working with metals such as stainless steel copper sheet magnesium honeycomb material and alloys. Experience applying mathematical calculations and measuring instruments to fabricate install or repair sheet metal components. WG-05 Level - MUST possess specializedexperience or training that has provided the ability to plan manufacture and install cylindrical square or rectangular-shaped objects that have easily constructed fastenings such as single and double-hem edges and single double or grooved seams.
