We are part of the Business Line Engineering and Design Centre (EDC) collaborating closely with other COWI offices outside India in Scandinavia the United Kingdom Singapore and North America. By joining the team you will become part of over 200 skilled geotechnical and underground engineering professionals in COWI. As a rock mechanics specialist you will work in close collaboration with specialists elsewhere in COWI to deliver projects globally.

As an Associate Technical Director in the Geotechnical discipline you will provide skilled technical guidance and leadership in rock mechanics for complex infrastructure projects. Your role will involve overseeing advanced analyses developing innovative solutions and ensuring the effective implementation.

You will:

  • Oversee the domain of rock mechanics within the geotechnical discipline
  • Take accountability and ownership of large complex projects working with extensive independence
  • Provide technical guidance and leadership in the development of technical and innovative solutions for underground infrastructure projects
  • Define and develop best practices (i.e. professional standards technical delivery approach knowledge sharing)
  • Evaluate the skills and resources required to maintain capable project teams
  • Contribute to attracting and retaining key staff members while effectively mentoring other less experienced engineers to ensure teams professional development
  • Actively participate in the recruitment of staff in conjunction with the Head of Discipline


On a day-to-day basis you will:

  • Lead and manage rock mechanics design teams for delivery of medium to large infrastructure hydroelectric power or transit metro tunnel projects
  • Perform tasks on projects requiring a broad and deep knowledge in the field of rock engineering related to tunnels shafts caverns slopes and underground structures
  • Represent design teams in technical meetings or workshops
  • Oversee the delivery of projects to time scope and budget
  • Develop scope of work schedules and budgets based on project requirements
  • Review and take accountability for the work of other engineers
  • Communicate design progress effectively while establishing and maintaining strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Oversee development of project documentation such as technical memoranda geotechnical design reports and presentations
  • Provide leadership in preparation of bids and tenders considering technical and commercial aspects
  • Collaborate proactively with project managers and task leads located in COWI offices outside India

To thrive in this position you must be able to communicate in written and spoken English to be able to interact with internal as well as external teams. You must possess strong inter-personnel skills to be able to build trust with your addition you must have proficient analytical skills and a structured work approach to develop practical solutions.

Furthermore you should have:

  • Masters degree in Rock Mechanics or Geology with a minimum of 20 years of project design experience in the analysis and design of rock tunnels caverns slopes shafts and underground structures.
  • Prior experience of leading rock mechanics design teams for transportation underground and hydropower infrastructure projects
  • Sound knowledge of rock mechanics fundamentals including various design approaches
  • Understanding of tunnelling and underground construction methods such as drill and blast NATM NMT or TBM
  • Basic working knowledge of typical BIM and AutoCAD
  • Experience with design software such as RS2/3 SWEDGE UNWEDGE DIPS UDEC 3DEC FracMan IRAZU FLAC 2D/3D Plaxis 2D/3D Sofistik and/or others
  • Knowledge of working with international standards (EURO Canadian NFF BS and API etc.)
  • Experience within Scandinavian UK or North America markets would be a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate seamlessly across geographical and cultural boundaries
  • Proficient time-management and organisation skills ability to multi-task and ability to communicate and collaborate with multiple stakeholder.
