Serves as Emergency Department physician of the operation Emergency Medicine Service and has programmatic responsibilities for the delivery of emergency care at Columbia VAHCS. The incumbent reports to the Chief of the Emergency Medicine Service for all clinical administrative and quality performance matters. The incumbent must be able to develop interpersonal relations within and between departments as well as display skill in problem solving and conflict resolution. Duties include but not limited to:
FUNCTIONS:
Clinical Responsibilities:
(100% of time) The incumbent will be fully qualified and certified to function in a clinical role in accordance with the guidelines and policies of the Columbia VA Medical Center and National VHA. The focus will be to evaluate stabilize treat discharge admit or transfer patients with acute medical psychiatric or surgical needs in the Emergency Department (ED) and Fast Track (FT) Unit of the Emergency Medicine Service. The Emergency Medicine Physician (EMP) may also be involved in ongoing quality and performance improvement activities such as peer review committee participation teaching of residents and Physician Assistants/Nurse Practitioner students and working to improve the overall efficiency of the ED/FT flow and function. EMP will work as a team with nursing administrative and ancillary staff in providing patient care.
Routine procedures:
Intubation vascular access LP thoracentesis/paracentesis chest tube and splints and all other Emergency Medicine procedures.
Clinical duties and Responsibilities:
Clinical: Provide direct patient care in the Emergency Department and Fast Track under the guidance of the Emergency Medicine Service Chief/Director. Respond to disaster events as part of the emergency management response system.
Certification: Board certification or Board eligible in Emergency Medicine. Maintain certification in BLS and ACLS educational requirements and proficiency in Core requirements for work in the Emergency Department and Fast Track.
Academic/Teaching/Training:
a) Participates in the formal education of the residents fellows medical students physician assistant residents and physician assistant students by presenting teaching rounds lectures conferences etc.
b) Demonstrates and trains residents fellows medical students physician assistant residents and physician assistant students in medical procedures that are required to provide optimal patient care appropriate to their expertise while doing clinical care.
c) Attend committee or conference meetings as required. Participate in a peer review process for the Emergency Medicine Service and the facility. Be responsible for maintaining all the certifications and educational requirements to work in the ED and Fast Track. EMP will participate in activities of the Columbia VAHCS that are designed to meet the requirements of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (The Joint Commission) as they apply to the position.
Work Schedule: Monday thru Sunday rotating 12 hour shifts. Subject to change based on the needs of the facility
