Job Summary

Summary

Corrections professionals who foster a humane and secure environment and ensure public safety by preparing individuals for successful reentry into our communities.


Duties

Responsible for traveling throughout their respective region providing complex specialized dental services for federal prisoners confined at the facilities within the region.

Provides in-house specialized dental services (e.g. complex exodontia biopsies pre-prosthetic surgery) at the request of local institutions within their respective region and as approved by the Regional Dental Consultant.

Performs all duties in accordance with current accepted dental practices and when necessary refers selected cases to outside consultants or specialists.

Provides timely and appropriate care to inmates at facilities within their respective region in the absence of the Chief Dental Officer or staff dentist.

Provides additional clinical support to understaffed dental programs and/or provides in-house advanced surgical care for inmates as appropriate in the dental clinical setting.

This position is located in a BOP correctional facility and requires significant travel.

Along with all other correctional institutional employees incumbent is charged with responsibility for maintaining security of the institution. The staff correctional responsibilities precede all others required by this position and are performed on a regular and recurring basis.

Qualifications

To be considered for the position you must meet the following qualification requirements.

Basic Requirements:

Education:

Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from a school approved by the American Dental Association (ADA) or the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

Licensure: Applicants must have passed National Board of Dental Examinations (NBDE) which are developed and administered by the
Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE) and possess a current full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State the District of Columbia the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico or a territory of the United States.

All qualified referred candidates will undergo a credentialing process prior to employment with the Bureau of Prisons. This process includes validation of medical examinations education internship and residency. AND

Experience:

In addition to meeting the above education and licensure requirements applicants must have one or more full years of experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level performing professional dentistry work for GS-12 level and above assignments.

Qualifying experience involves the evaluation prevention diagnosis and treatment of diseases injuries and disorders of the oral cavity and maxillofacial area. Examples of dentistry experience may include the removal of decay; filling cavities; straightening extracting and repairing teeth; treating gum diseases; performing corrective surgery; making measurements/models for dentures to replace missing teeth administering anesthetics writing prescriptions; and performing other requirements of the position.

AND

In addition to meeting the above basic requirement and licensure requirements Applicants must have completed one year of full-time experience in professional dentistry work that is equivalent to the next lower grade level; or equivalent experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level and/or training.

Some examples of qualifying experience are:

  • Experience performing diagnostics and treatment such as restorative therapy and surgical procedures (full bony impactions torus removal etc.).
  • Experience and comprehensive knowledge of standard dental treatment practices and the ability to apply fundamental management practices with available resources to the delivery of quality dental care.
  • Experience and working knowledge of policy procedures and standards prescribed by the Joint Commission Department of Justice Bureau of Prisons (BOP) American Correctional Association and U.S. Courts.
  • Experience developing plans programs procedures which promoted optimum productivity for a dental program.

Medical Requirement:

Applicants must be able to distinguish shades of color.

Special Conditions of Employment Section:

The incumbent is subject to geographic relocation to meet the needs of the agency.

Appointment is subject to satisfactory completion of a urinalysis physical and background investigation. All applicants are subject to National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and credit checks.

All applicants not currently working in an institution will be required to complete a qualification inquiry regarding convictions of misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence in order to be authorized to carry a firearm.

The Core Value Assessment (CVA) is an in-person assessment that must be facilitated at a Bureau of Prisons Human Resource Servicing office. On the day of the scheduled interview a CVA will be administered. The applicant assessment must be completed within a 70 minute time period and a passing score of 68 must be obtained. Further employment consideration will not be extended if the applicant fails to complete the examination or fails to achieve a passing score. Note: The Core Value Assessment will not be administered to current BOP employees.

Successful completion of the Introduction to Correctional Techniques three-week training course at Glynco Georgia is required.
