Job Summary

Summary

This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol (AOC) Superintendent Capitol Grounds Maintenance Division Mechanical Operations Branch. The Motor Vehicle Operator performs driving and operating duties on a variety of motor vehicles and equipment including a 2017 Trash/Recycler vehicle GVW 62000 lbs. with air brakes and multiple equipment controls. This position requires a Commercial Drivers License (CDL).


Duties

Tour of Duty:Tuesday - Saturday 6:00am to 2:30 pm

Motor Vehicle Operating

  • Operates vehicles with a gross vehicle weight in excess of 62000 pounds on a regular and recurring basis to haul trash and recycle waste materials from all Capitol Grounds areas for which the AOC is responsible.
  • Transports debris to a landfill or incinerator. Ensures that the cargo is properly loaded distributed and secured and that the vehicle is not loaded beyond the designed capacity.
  • Picks up and loads leaves collected by vacuum machine.
  • Assists the Tree Care Branch in picking up and hauling branches trunks and other debris of trees being removed or pruned. Hauls leaves and ground-up debris to a storage site at the U.S. Botanic Garden or other facility to be used for mulch. Hauls large tree trunks to a landfill.
  • Operates a snowplow or salt truck with attachments for snow removal and dispersal of salt and sand. Operates and drives a bucket truck as assigned.

Motor Vehicle Maintenance

  • Performs basic operator maintenance on vehicles operated. (e.g. monitoring of fluid levels checking tires battery and brakes keeping oil and gas at the proper levels replacing air filters and interior lights checking tire pressure and hose connections washing the vehicle sweeping and dusting interior and performing other minor repairs). Changes tires.
  • Attends safety classes and ensures the safe and legal operation of all vehicles.

The incumbent must follow all relevant safety rules regulations and standard operating procedures. Must utilize knowledge of and must comply with all OSHA and Office of Compliance safety rules and regulations to ensure that work progresses in a safe manner. Provides or receives training either on the job or through classroom training to ensure that all safety practices and equipment is fully utilized. Must ensure the use of any required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
