Job Summary

Summary

This National Guard position is for a SURFACE MAINTENANCE MECHANIC Position Description Number Dand is part of the NJ CSMS B National Guard.

NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED: This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the National Guard. Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform. Acceptance of an excepted service position constitutes concurrence with these requirements as a condition of employment.


Duties

As a SURFACE MAINTENANCE MECHANIC WGyou will:

  • Troubleshoot perform maintenance and major repairs on heavy-duty mobile equipment
  • Troubleshoot equipment and diagnose the cause of mechanical failures
  • Remove and disassemble engines
  • Independently perform repairs and maintenance functions in remote locations
  • Conduct readiness and inspections on vehicles
  • Assist in the maintenance of production reports and recommendations
  • Instruct operator/crew in the maintenance of equipment and provides technical advice and assistance to supported units when requested.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

    MILITARY REQUIREMENTS:

    Compatible military grade and assignment required prior to the effective date of placement. This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the employing states National Guard. Applicants who are not currently a member of the National Guard must be eligible for immediate membership.     Military Grades: E-4 to E-7

    Compatible Military Assignments: CMF:91
    Selectee has two (2) years to obtain required MOS

    Title 32 Dual-Status Positions: Compatible Military Assignments
    Appointments may require the selected candidate to be assigned to a *military unit* compatible with the full-time Military Technician (Dual Status) position.


    *Military Unit* -- The unit by which the individual is employed as a Military Technician (Dual Status) employee; or a unit that the individual is employed as a Military Technician (Dual Status) employee to support. (Guidance established by NJ HRO-J1)


    Additional Employment Requirements:

    • Participation in direct deposit is mandatory

    • May be required to successfully complete a probationary period

    • Federal employment suitability as determined by a background investigation

    • Males born after 31 December 1959 must be registered for Selective Service

    Qualifications

    GENERAL EXPERIENCE:
    Experience or training which demonstrates knowledge of equipment to be able to do routine jobs preventative maintenance use of common tools and equipment.

    SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
    Must have at least 18 months of specialized experience or training in the following areas:

    • Diagnosing repairing and modifying complex vehicles
    • Knowledge of diagnostic equipment
    • Solving complex maintenance and repair problems
    • Evaluating work performed on vehicles equipment and systems
