The MRI Technologist is an operator of the super conductive Magnetic Resonance Imager (MRI) a highly complex computerized imaging device which employs the use of strong magnetic fields and radio waves to acquire images.

The MRI Technologist operates independently without direct supervision as the technologist responsible for coordination of all MRI procedures and examinations as well as reconstructions using raw image data associated with these examinations. MRI examinations are performed with and without the use of contrast materials. The purpose of these exams is to achieve diagnostic studies so that proper diagnosis and treatment may be effectuated. The MRI Tech is responsible for the safety of patients employees and guests entering the Magnetic environment.
Prepares contrast materials under the direction of the radiologist for the purpose of performing MRI examinations requiring injectable contrast. These procedures require the use of needles syringes power injectors and contrast media. The MRI Technologist must know the effects and adverse reactions of contrast media. Improper use or administration of the contrast materials run the risk of patient mortality; therefore it is essential that a thorough understanding of usage be possessed by those who prepare it and they must be continuously on the alert to the patients condition and other disorders. Adverse reactions on the part of the patient require immediate attention so that harm does not come to the patient or equipment.
Must have a thorough knowledge of anatomy and physiology to produce the more complex and complicated MR examinations. The MRI Technologists work on both a closed and open MRI which all manner of MRI examinations is performed to include routine and emergent MR examinations of the Head Spine Chest Abdomen Pelvis upper and lower extremities to include the joints. More complex MR examinations such as MRCPs focused Liver Pancreas Renal Cardiac protocols MR arthrograms and MRAs to include abdominal MRAs Arterial Runoffs of the upper and lower extremities with Multiplaner 3D and MIP reconstructions.
Responsible to recognize and exhibit good safety practices around the super conductive magnet to comply with published FDA safety standards and communicated safety procedures especially when allowing entry into the magnet gantry room (5 gauss magnetic field) of; ferrous objects which could harm patients and employees patients with cardiac pacemakers and other implantable devices checking patients and others with magnetic detector before entering room and to immediately report observed safety infractions and unsafe working conditions. The MRI Technologist is knowledgeable in all facets of the MRI safety screening process.
The MRI technologist is responsible for completing or supervising the completion the following quality control procedures which may include but not exclusively the following:
1) Daily gradient calibration
2) Daily phantoms
3) Daily computer file maintenance
4) Daily Crash Cart Checks
5) Fine Tuning of gradient during examination
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 2:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. with rotation on call.

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases.
When setting pay a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).
Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave 13 days of sick leave 11 paid Federal holidays per year)
Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual based on prior work experience or military service experience.
Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth adoption or foster care placement of a child.
Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment full time employees with a total family income below $144000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.
