The Elections Division of the County Clerk-Recorders Office is gearing up for the June 2 2026 Primary Election and is seeking to fill 500 temporary Extra Help positions to support elections that service every voter in Ventura County across all 10 cities.

Whether youre assisting voters at a Vote Center or keeping elections running smoothly behind the scenes in a warehouse environment youll play a direct role in ensuring fair accurate and secure elections. These short-term assignments offer meaningful public service experience flexible durations and the opportunity to work as part of a fast paced mission driven team.

Extra help employees are hired to perform temporary work and are paid on an hourly basis. They work on call which means that their work hours may vary from day to day and they may need to work various shifts on evenings and weekends. Hours are driven by the Elections Division workload and may be less than 8 hours/day.

Extra help employees are not regular county employees and are not eligible for county benefits. Additionally extra help employees are limited to working a maximum of 720 hours per fiscal year which runs from July 1 to June 30.

There are currently two (2) assignments available:

Vote Center Assignment

Perform a variety of ballot processing customer service and data entry functions in support of the election. Depending upon job assignment terms of employment may range from several days to several weeks.

Warehouse Assignment

Perform the manual and clerical work required for the operation of a warehouse including receiving transporting stocking issuing shipping inventorying assembling packaging and record keeping. Performs complex and varied inventory management duties in support of multiple functional areas of a central warehouse unit. Ideal candidates must be willing and able to work effectively in a fast-paced team environment; be flexible and available for overtime evening and weekend work; perform routine and repetitive tasks while standing for long periods of time; lift 40 to 75 pounds repeatedly throughout the day; be adaptable and maintain attention to detail time sensitive setting in close working conditions; and communicate and interact effectively with supervisors peers and others departments.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

This classification is used to fill temporary assignments during local state and federal elections.

PAYROLL TITLES AND APPROXIMATE SALARIES:

Elections Worker I: $22.50 Hourly

Elections Worker II: $25.50 Hourly

These classifications are pending Board approval.

AGENCY/DEPARTMENT:County Clerk-Recorder Elections Division

The eligible list established from this recruitment will be used to fill current temporary/intermittent positions as well as future Extra Help vacancies. There are currently 500 vacancies in the Elections Division depending on operational needs.

TENTATIVE SCHEDULE:

Opening Date: Monday February 2 2026

Closing Date: Continuous and may close at any time; therefore the schedule for the remainder of the process will depend upon when we receive a sufficient number of qualified applications to meet business needs.

Examples Of Duties

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

Elections Worker I

Vote Center Assignment

  • Operates variety of office equipment (desktop/laptop).
  • Performs clerical duties data entry and voter look-up.
  • Issues election ballots and assists voters with casting their ballots.
  • Helps resolve public complaints and issues.
  • Assists the public in completing forms and explaining rules regulations and procedures.
  • Assists vote center lead.
  • Performs other duties as required.


Elections Worker II

Vote Center Assignment (in addition to performing Elections Worker I duties):

  • Leads and oversees vote center extra help workers.
  • Opens and closes assigned vote center.
  • Sets up voting equipment and coordinates with the Elections Office to troubleshoot and resolve site-related issues.
  • Sets up and coordinates voting site.
  • Picks up and delivers voting equipment from Elections office to vote center.
  • Ensures all ballots are safely transported to the Elections office. following two-person custody requirements.
  • Supervises vote center staff and reviews/approves their timecards.
  • Trains vote center staff.
  • May conduct basic troubleshooting on election equipment.
  • May assist with post-election manual tally process.

Warehouse Assignment

  • Cleans equipment and maintains a clean working area/warehouse.
  • Assists with verifying quantities of voting equipment to be issued out to vote centers; reviews shipping documents.
  • Packages voting equipment and materials to be issued to vote centers.
  • Collect rental transportation vehicles load and deliver voting equipment and materials to designated voting locations.
  • Identifies damaged equipment during functionality and pre-logic accuracy testing and equipment diagnostic.
  • May repair and perform minor maintenance on warehouse equipment by replacing broken and missing parts.
  • Inputs and retrieves data from computerized inventory control system.
  • Labels and stores items for easy accessibility to items.
  • May lift/carry/move items weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Typical Qualifications

These are entrance requirements to the examination process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.

EDUCATION TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Elections Worker I

Any combination of education training experience equivalent to six (6) months of clerical experience.

Elections Worker II

Any combination of education training experience equivalent to eighteen (18) months of clerical experience.


NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents must be able to work flexible hours: early start time overtime evenings holidays and weekends with little notice and as needed.
  • Be willing and able to perform routine and repetitive tasks which may include sitting or standing on concrete floor for long periods of time.
  • Must be willing and able to work in the Elections Division office and vote center locations throughout Ventura County.
  • Must currently possess or be eligible to obtain and maintain a valid California drivers license

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT for Warehouse Assignment only:

  • Must be able to lift carry and move items weighing up to 75 pounds.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Some (I) to thorough (II) knowledge of: modern office methods and practices; record maintenance systems; letter writing and report compilation and public contact techniques.

Working (I) to considerable (II) knowledge of: the operations procedures and practices used in support of the function to which assigned; techniques to expedite or improve clerical tasks and record processing; correct English usage spelling grammar and punctuation.

Working skills: depending on assignment incumbents may be required to demonstrate a certain prescribed proficiency in typing or equivalent word processing/data entry and/or taking/transcribing dictation.

Working (I) to thorough (II) ability to: perform and coordinate moderately difficult and responsible clerical work with little or no direct supervision; set up and maintain records and filing systems; extract information from a variety of sources; operate a variety of automated office equipment; accurately perform and proof the transfer of information from one document to another; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships; understand follow and convey written and verbal directions.
