Summary of Duties
Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre has a vacancy for the position of Risk Manager within the Enterprise Risk Management Department. Reporting to the Director Enterprise Risk Management and Radiation Safety the incumbent will work collaboratively with senior leadership directors managers educators front-line staff and various internal and external stakeholders to address risk management issues and implement hospital wide policies and other initiatives to promote patient safety and mitigate risk.
Risk Management Duties:
Identifies and mitigates risk at every opportunity with a focus on improving patient staff and public safety.
Responds daily to organization-wide risk requests to provide expert consultation and advice on a wide variety of patient care policy and administrative matters with internal constituents including senior leaders managers physicians clinical staff. Privacy and patient safety
Reviews/audits/edits Safety Reports and ensures due diligence in the investigation and follow up with stakeholders as applicable. Monitors Safety Reports for trends and brings same forward to applicable stakeholders
Leads the risk response to critical patient incidents including supporting clinical and non-clinical teams liaising with patients/families conducting investigations and leading QCIPA and non-QCIPA system reviews through to the implementation of recommendations.
Leads professional liability and personal injury claims; leads investigations of claims with adjuster and legal counsel; represents hospital at Examinations for Discovery; supports and guides staff defendants their managers and others through the legal process
Executes an effective response to external sources of risk identification e.g. Coroners requests jury recommendations regulatory college complaints product hazard and recall notifications and look backs etc.
Assesses identifies and mitigates risk associated with planned shutdown of services or utilities and facilities renewal projects by effective contingency planning with stakeholders
Provides risk consultation to develop and revise policies procedures and Emergency Response Codes to avoid and/or control risk
Participates in and/or leads key risk related committee i.e. System Review/QCIPA committee
Ensures appropriate actions are taken to address identified deficiencies/areas for improvement
Ensures the annual completion by all stakeholders of the Risk Assessment Checklists (RAC) required by hospitals Insurer HIROC and tracking follow-up action.
Partners with internal and external stakeholders to maximize opportunities for collaboration and integration of best practice and ensure the hospitals risk management processes are based on best practices and meet legal and regulatory requirements
Qualifications/Skills
Undergraduate degree in a Health Sciences discipline required minimum 5 years of acute care experience.
Current registration with a recognized health profession college or regulatory body if applicable
Minimum 5 years experience in healthcare risk management preferred
Demonstrated knowledge of current principles of risk management/mitigation quality improvement and patient safety practices and emergency management
Excellent critical thinking attention to detail analytic and problem-solving skills
Previous experience with online incident reporting programs and electronic charts an asset
Knowledge of Canadian Incident Analysis Framework
Demonstrated ability to prioritize various demands in a dynamic and fast paced work environment and manage a number of projects simultaneously
Self-motivated with demonstrated ability to relate well with all levels of staff physicians volunteers families and community partners
Demonstrated facilitation conflict resolution and negotiation skills to lead groups to consensus and resolve conflict
Demonstrated interpersonal diplomacy and communication skills (written verbal and presentation)
Experience in teaching and/or presenting to large groups at all levels of the organization
Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Word PowerPoint Excel Outlook
