DescriptionWe are seeking a patient energetic and passionate Adaptive Physical Education (APE) Teacher to support our 853 School-Age Program serving students with intensive educational and related service needs. This role works collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team to provide individualized developmentally appropriate physical education programming aligned with each students IEP. The APE Teacher supports students across a wide range of abilities and diagnoses and plays a key role in promoting physical development functional movement social engagement and overall well-being within a highly structured therapeutic school environment.
Primary Responsibilities and Essential Functions of Position:
- Follows a schedule of individual and group Adapted Physical Education sessions.
- Formulates an age-appropriate treatment plan for each student.
- Writes and implements IEP goals for each student.
- Consults with classroom teachers and other RS Providers to discuss appropriate treatment plan for each student when applicable.
- Selects orders and maintains physical education supplies and equipment.
- Attends professional staff meetings and in-service training.
- Uses standardized and non-standardized assessment tools to determine the current level of performance of each student.
- Organizes and maintains a neat and structured environment which assists the facilitation of each students learning which includes the use of space selection of materials scheduling and behavior management.
- Assists in the classroom according to staffing patterns and students needs (changing diapers assistance with toileting etc.) leading by example.
- Escorts and assists students to and from the bus providing opportunities for students increased independence in orientation and mobility.
- The teacher should also encourage the push-in model of Related Services within the APE environment when appropriate.
- Maintains a good social-emotional climate which serves to enhance the overalldevelopment ofpositive self-esteem of each student.
- Performs other appropriate job-related activities as required by immediate supervisor or as circumstances warrant.
Qualifications- New York State Certification in Adaptive Physical Education and/or Physical Education required
- Bachelors Degree in Physical Education Adaptive Physical Education Special Education or a related field required
- Knowledge of IEP development implementation and documentation in an 853 school-age setting.
- Ability to work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team serving students with intensive needs.
