Duties

  • Provides a full range of field level overhaul and repair work on vehicles powered by internal combustion engines gasoline and multi-fuel.
  • Diagnoses component and system malfunctions and defects using visual and auditory examinations and specialized measuring and testing equipment (e.g. compression testers multi-meters test benches oscilloscopes dial gauges etc.)
  • Determines the exact nature and extent of required repairs and perform major and minor repairs on enginespower transmissions suspensions steering and braking systems and related electrical fuel hydraulic wheel and engine assembles.
  • Records maintenance checks and services performed list additional repairs and required adjustments on the vehicle and document parts/materials used.
  • Ensures that equipment and tools are properly secured and work area is maintained and free of unnecessary hazards.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain HAZMAT endorsement on their CDL within one year of hire date.
  • Mission Essential - This is a Mission Essential (ME) position. The incumbent may be required to report to work in the event of a natural disaster inclement weather or crisis.
  • Licenses/Certifications: Must possess a current valid state drivers license and a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Class A for vehicles that they will be required to drive before consideration for the position.

Qualifications

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required you must meet any screen-out element listed and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience not necessarily the length of time and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition.

The SOE and minimum qualifications for this position is:

  • Must possess a current valid state drivers license and a Commercial Drivers License (CDL)Class A for vehicles that they will be required to drive before being considered for the position.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g. professional philanthropic religious spiritual community student social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies knowledge and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience including volunteer experience.

Physical Effort: Incumbent works in tiring and uncomfortable positions requiring frequent bending reaching stretching climbing and crouching; works on top and under vehicles in cramped position; performs strenuous work and frequently lifts and carries items weighing 40 to 50 pounds; must push pull turn and position parts assemblies equipment and tools. Often lifts and moves heavier items with the assistance of others and with lifting devices such as jacks hoists and cranes.

Working Conditions: Primarily works inside in lighted heated and ventilated areas. However the work area may be drafty dirty and noisy with fumes from vehicles frequently present. The employee stands for extended periods of time on hard surfaces may be subject to cuts bruises abrasions or other injury from tools and equipment and may have to crawl under vehicles to make repairs on damp surfaces. Ability to work in inclement weather. Such working conditions are common to this kind of job.

The incumbent of this position has been designated as an emergency employee. The term Emergency Employee is used to designate those employees who must report to work in emergency situations. Emergency dismissal or closure announcements do not apply to these employees. The employees who occupy these positions may be required to report for duty in any situation that prevents significant numbers of employees in the local area from reporting for work on time or which requires agencies to close all or part of their activities.

Drug-Free Workplace Policy

The Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) is committed to maintaining a safe drug-free workplace. All DLA employees are required to refrain from illegal drug use on and off duty. DLA conducts pre-employment reasonable suspicion post-accident and random drug testing.

Applicants tentatively selected for employment in testing designated positions will undergo a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Refusal to undergo testing or testing positive for illegal drugs will result in withdrawal of the tentative job offer and a six-month denial of employment with DLA from the date of the drug test. Employees in drug testing designated positions are subject to random drug testing.

The DLA drug testing panel tests for the following substances: marijuana cocaine opiates heroin phencyclidine amphetamines methamphetamines fentanyl nor fentanyl methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA) and opioids.

ADVISORY: Use of cannabidiol (CBD) products may result in a positive drug test for marijuana. DLA employees are subject to Federal law and under Federal law Marijuana is a Schedule I drug and is illegal.
