Job Summary
Summary
These positions are located at Hot Springs National Park. The primary purpose is to perform building and/or utility maintenance and operation duties. Incumbent utilizes journeyman to master level knowledge and skills in several trades and crafts.
The primary function of these positions are the oversight and maintenance of all park HVAC systems to ensure property operation.
Additional duties of this position include:
- Performing simple and routine maintenance and repair of grounds exterior structures buildings equipment and related utilities particularly related to electrical and plumbing.
- Assisting other maintenance workers or tradesmen in the performance of their work.
- Performing minor carpentry repairs using simple measures and hand tools on such tasks as replacing broken planks on picnic tables broken windows using precut stock; minor adjustments or replacing hinges latches and catches.
- Performing minor painting using brush and roller according to specific instructions on projects where appearances are not critical such as staining picnic tables and trash barrels.
- Operating a light truck to pick up supplies and to transport materials to and from work sites while assisting on project work.
- Making minor repairs as needed referring problems to higher graded workers.
- Operating a forklift to load and unload supplies and light equipment.

- Drivers License: You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists) you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued drivers license that is current and has not been revoked suspended canceled or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued drivers license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation and again every year or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities) and at your own expense all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid drivers licenses whether current or past possessed by you. Please indicate in your application whether you possess a valid State drivers license.
- Uniform: You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
- Minimum Age Restrictions: Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:
- Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision (SCREEN OUT)
- Abilty to Interpret Instructions Specification etc. (includes blueprints reading)
- Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment
- Knowledge of Equipment Assembly Installation Repair etc.
- Knowledge of materials
- Technical practices (theoretical precise artistic)
- Use of measuring instruments
SCREEN OUT:
Minimum Qualifications: Perform most of the work as a Maintenance Mechanic at the journeyman level with a high level of independence in at least two of the following trades: Masonry Electrical Plumbing Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic Utilities Systems Repair-Operator and /or Engineering Equipment Operator.

Education
There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay.
The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster.
Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402b7) based on series and grade anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).
If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period you are still welcome to apply. However please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.
The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours unless granted an exception by OPM.
Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels project needs employee performance or other considerations.
Physical Demands: Physical effort is heavy to moderate and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50-100 pounds unassisted following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working climb ladders or scaffolding and bend stoop climb and work in awkward positions. This requires standing bending stooping kneeling climbing and working in tiring and cramped positions.Working Conditions: Exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures -40 to 90 degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding. Exposed to dust dirt wind and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment paints solvents etc. May be exposed to electrical shocks and biting insects. The incumbents clothing may become soiled from grease dust and chemicals. There is frequent exposure to the possibility of cuts bruises falling burns broken bones and chemical vapors constant noise rotating machinery dust grease chemicals oil fumes and infections blood pathogens when working in or about systems. Incumbent may also be exposed to energized circuits electrical shock burns electrical rotary devices cuts and abrasions from the use of tools and equipment and burns from chemicals. The incumbent is required to wear prescribed safety equipment and to adhere to safety rules and regulations and standards as set by OSHA and the Parks established Safety Plan.
