Physician (Regular FT) Anesthesiologist

This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until December 23 2025. The initial cut-off date for referral of eligible applications will be November 1 2025 with subsequent cut-off dates on the 1st of each month. Eligible applications received after that date will be referred at regular intervals until position is filled.

Duties will include but are not limited to: pre-anesthesia peri-anesthesia and post-anesthesia care in outpatient and inpatient setting; administration of general anesthesia spinal anesthesia epidural anesthesia and regional anesthesia in collaboration with other anesthesiologists; perform thorough pre/peri/post anesthesia assessments and develop individualized anesthesia patient care plans; emergency airway management in the hospital placement of intravenous catheters and intra-arterial lines and on-call responsibilities commensurate with other anesthesiologists in the department. The Anesthesiologist will assist with process improvement and quality assurance activities specific to the department.

1. The Anesthesiologist will independently administer and monitor anesthesia care during to include but not limited to general surgery vascular urology podiatry orthopedics otolaryngology and ophthalmology procedures by providing services such as:
   1. Performing pre-anesthetic assessments and evaluations of a patient and developing an anesthetic plan;
   2. Initiating the planned anesthetic technique which may include general regional and local anesthesia and IV sedation;
   3. Administering the anesthetic adjuvant drugs accessory drugs and fluids necessary to manage the anesthetic and to maintain a patients physiologic homeostasis and correct abnormal responses to the anesthesia or the surgery;
   4. Applying or inserting the appropriate non-invasive and invasive monitoring modalities for collecting and interpreting a patients physiological data;
   5. Managing a patients airway and pulmonary status including induce endotracheal intubation mechanical ventilation pharmacological support respiratory therapy and extubating;
   6. Managing a patients emergence and recovery from anesthesia;
   7. Releasing a patient to post-anesthesia care providers;
   8. Responding to emergency situations by providing airway management administration of emergency fluids and drugs or using basic or advanced cardiac life support techniques;
   9. Assisting with procedures in the Post Anesthesia Recovery Unit (PACU) and the Intensive Care Unit (ICU); and
   10. Other tasks inherent to an Anesthesiologist in collaboration with other VA staff in the Surgery Department.
   11. Other duties as assigned.
2. The Anesthesiologist will perform services in accordance with VA policies and procedures and the By Laws of the Louis A. Johnson VAMC and will work in cooperation with the Chief of Surgery and other administrative staff.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements:

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
• Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
• Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State Territory or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia.
• Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) b) OR
  (2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA)OR
  (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States) which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences.
  Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e. not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather they are to have a scope of practice that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.
