Job Summary
Summary
This position is located at the Butler VA Medical Center and is part of the Minor Improvement Team (MIT) under the supervision of the Assistant Chief Engineer. The incumbent performs maintenance repairs applications and installations associated with the plastering and painting trades throughout the medical center. He/she will install and finish drywall repair existing walls and ceilings of all types prepare areas for finish application and then apply the correct finish.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:00am-3:30pm

Major Duties Include but not limited to:
- Correctly fabricate station signs using computerized engraving machine and other sign shop equipment or lettering with stencils.
- Prepare new and existing drywall and plaster surfaces for finish application.
- Plan and lay out work to be accomplished and select the proper tools materials and methods to complete the job in accordance with the accepted trade practices.
- Finish new plaster and drywall surfaces and repair existing surfaces.
- Determine mix and apply the proper plastering materials on all types of backgrounds such as metal wood lath wallboard and masonry surfaces.
- Complete the finishing work to obtain a smooth surface or proper texture.
- Prepares surfaces and use appropriate coating techniques in performing painting duties. Interior and exterior painting are both required using brush roller or spray type painting. They will prepare each surface to achieve the desired finish.
- Independently plans constructs alters maintains and repairs buildings structures partitions panels shelving concrete forms furniture acoustical ceiling systems wood or metal-framed walls ceilings and soffits gypsum wallboard handrails wall protection and corner guards.
- Installs replaces and repairs flooring surfaces to include but not be limited to vinyl composite tile vinyl plank carpet and sheet goods.
- Hangs items on walls using anchors installs blocking and bracing as required.
- Incumbent is required to perform work to close tolerances and operate a wide variety of specialty wood working tools and hand tools.
- Incumbent must be able to set up adjust and maintain all tools per their individual specifications.
- Plans measures and lays out carpentry materials using general and precision techniques.
- Must be able to read and interpret blueprints to ensure accuracy.
- Incumbent would be required to complete other tasks as needed including but not limited to finishing drywall painting placing and finishing concrete perform locksmith duties sign shop duties and operate equipment such as backhoe skid loader mini excavator pickup trucks and small dump trucks. When required this position will perform other trades within the MIT shop such as general
carpentry locksmith duties ICRA control installations and operation of trucks and equipment. - Use of proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required; including but not limited to safety glasses hearing protection safety toed shoes and the use of an N-95 respirator and participating in a respirator fit testing program.
In performing daily tasks physical effort and stamina is required in walking stooping kneeling working with hands over head or in close quarters and in strained positions lifting and using different muscles in different positions. The incumbent works from ladders
scaffolding and hydraulic work platforms. Requires good vision (with or without glasses) and should have good hearing (aid permitted). They frequently handle lifts carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 80 pounds. The incumbent will be required to work from ladders scaffolds and platforms and in cramped and hard-to-reach places. Most work requires the incumbent to stand stoop bend kneel climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequent lifting carrying and setting up materials and equipment that weigh up to 80 pounds. He/she is standing or walking much of the time and must be in good overall physical condition. Physical capability to regularly walk long distances dexterity and accurate eye hand coordination and corrected 20/20 vision are required.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed indoors and outdoors in various weather and temperature conditions. May be subjected to excessive dampness or chill close quarters uneven walking surfaces working on ladders or scaffolding and confined spaces. Must work alone or in cooperation
and coordination with others. Many work sites are hot dirty dusty greasy poorly lit cramped and with unpleasant orders. The incumbent will be required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment as necessary to accomplish assigned tasks in a safe manner.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
