QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelors Degree in Athletic Training or related field.
- Certification National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification CPR Certification and Heartsaver First Aid Certification.
- Demonstrate a strong understanding of sports medicine anatomy physiology and injury assessment.
- Possess effective organizational abilities to oversee both clinical and administrative duties.
- Display flexibility in working hours which may include evenings and weekends.
- Prior experience preferred but not required.
- Hold a valid drivers license and exhibit willingness to travel to local worksites using reliable transportation.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
REPORTS TO: Athletic Trainer and/or building principal.
JOB GOAL: To guide parents/students/coaches regarding athletic health issues.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
Work with coaches to create and implement conditioning programs for athletes.
Administer first aid to injured athletes on the field in the gymnasium wrestling room or training room.
Evaluate injured athletes from all McKeesport Area School District athletic teams.
Apply protective or injury-prevention devices including taping bandaging and bracing for athletes.
Work cooperatively with and under the direction of the team physician with respect to:
Conditioning procedures
Operation of therapeutic devices and equipment
Fitting braces guards and other protective devices
Referral to a physician or hospital
Work collaboratively with coaches and the team physician in selecting protective athletic equipment and ensuring it meets safety standards.
Supervise the athletic training room including:
Maintaining an inventory of medical supplies and equipment; submitting a yearly inventory to the Athletic Director at the conclusion of the year
Issuing medical supplies and equipment to athletic teams at the beginning of each season and ensuring unused supplies and equipment are returned and inventoried at the end of each season
Selecting and requisitioning medical supplies and equipment for the athletic program
Maintaining injury records for all athletes and providing necessary forms for head coaches
Maintaining athlete medical files for a minimum of five (5) years
Work closely with the Athletic Director and coaches to coordinate pre-participation physicals prior to each sports season including:
Receiving updates from the athletic office regarding completed physicals health information and insurance forms
Ensuring no athlete participates in practices or games until all required paperwork is completed
Oversee concussion protocols as needed including baseline testing post-injury testing and return-to-play procedures.
Work with the Athletic Director to ensure that a team physician and ambulance are present at all varsity football home games and that required personnel and emergency vehicles are available in accordance with PIAA sports medical guidelines.
Supervise the rehabilitation of injured athletes including:
Collaborating with the athletes physician to develop rehabilitation programs
Maintaining records of rehabilitation plans and progress updates
Evaluating the effectiveness of rehabilitation programs
Assisting the Athletic Director with purchasing appropriate rehabilitation equipment
Perform other related duties consistent with the nature of the position as assigned by the Athletic Director.
