The City of Hamilton Fire Department is currently recruiting for Firefighters. All testing with the National Testing Network (NTN) must be completed by the close date Sunday March 01 2026. The exam provided by the National Testing Network will be used as the civil service exam.APPLICANTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR SCHEDULING AND TAKING THE NTN TEST PRIOR TO THE CLOSE DATE.

This is general duty firefighting work to combat and extinguish fires; perform emergency rescue and first aid; inspect structures and provide fire prevention information; and in a variety of tasks to maintain readiness of equipment and personnel. The primary critical responsibility of this classification is for the protection of life and property through learned procedures and responses. The work involves considerable physical exertion and the ability to perform prolonged strenuous work under adverse conditions where there is considerable hazard to the safety of self and others. Firefighter / Apparatus Driver classed personnel also act as alternates on the life squad in responding to emergency medical calls or may be assigned to inspection duties. Although Firefighters typically follow trained team patterns of response to emergency situations each individual must be able to react immediately and appropriately under conditions of extreme urgency. Working within a para-military organizational system assignments are received from and regulated by a superior officer both when fighting fires and at the station.

Essential Job Functions

  • Responds to alarms and assists in the suppression of fires including rescue entry ventilation and salvage.
  • Drives fire vehicles to emergencies operates pumper to supply regulated amounts of water operates aerial ladder.
  • Maintains the fire station cleaning and repairing equipment and training to maintain and improve preparedness in case of fire or emergency.
  • Handling a fire hose operation of a pumper and/or aerial apparatus rescue work ventilation procedures and similar tasks.
  • After a fire emergency or training activity maintains and prepares equipment to return it to readiness; maintains and tests fire apparatus associated equipment fire stations and grounds.
  • Participates in continuing Fire Department training programs drills instructions and testing on subjects such as firefighting and fire containment methods and techniques handling of emergencies due to chemical and hazardous materials fire inspection methods and knowledge emergency medical techniques and similar areas.
  • Responds to requests for emergency medical assistance; operates medical telemetry and patient monitoring equipment; drives emergency life squad vehicle.
  • When assigned shall educate the public in fire prevention methods.
  • Participates in hydrant hose and equipment testing and inspection.
  • Performs related work as required.

Skills/Knowledges/Abilities

  • Ability to learn a wide variety of firefighting techniques fire inspection knowledge and emergency medical skills within a reasonable working period.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies; ability to function effectively as a member of a trained emergency team following trained patterns of response.
  • Excellent character and background consistent with the trust required of a public safety officer.
  • Good general intelligence and mechanical aptitude to learn to operate a variety of specialized pieces of equipment.
  • Is required to train to and to maintain given levels of proficiency in emergency victim care.

Training/Education/Qualifications

MinimumQualifications:

  • Minimum of 18 at time of examination and not yet 41 years of age at time of appointment.
  • High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.).
  • Candidate must possess valid drivers license at time of appointment and will be verified prior to hire.
  • Capable of successfully completing an extensive medical examination appropriate to essential class functions.
  • A vision screening will be part of the medical examination and will include a color vision test and other relevant visualscreenings. Applicants must possess: Far visual acuity less than 20/40 binocular corrected with contact lenses orspectacles. Far visual acuity less than 20/100 binocular for wearers of hard contact or spectacles uncorrected. Successfullong-term soft-contact lens wearers (that is 6 months without a problem) are not subject to the uncorrected for finalists
  • Candidates must be capable of earning the following qualifications or possess them at the time of appointment. These certifications must be maintained for the duration of employment. (Candidates must be enrolled in Paramedic school for certification within 3 years of hire)
    1. Ohio Firefighter II Certification.
    2. Emergency Medical Technician- Basic (EMT) certification as issued by the State of Ohio
    3. Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic certification as issued by the State of Ohio
    4. Candidates who are not certified as a Firefighter II and Paramedic must successfully complete Work Keys assessment prior to hire date.
