2026 Communications Internship - The Virginia Department of Forestry has an exciting opportunity for college students in good academic standing at two-year and four-year undergraduate level programs or for veterans transitioning to civilian roles.

VDOF was established in 1914 to prevent and suppress forest fires and reforest bare addition to safeguarding our natural resources we also protect and manage critical information systems that support our mission.
The Virginia Department of Forestry Office of Communications intern position requires strong public relations marketing and public information skills encompassing both written and verbal forms.
The successful candidate will be highly motivated and detail oriented. The intern will work within with the Office of Communications team to research produce and edit engaging and entertaining content to promote forests and forestry in Virginia. Enthusiasm for Virginias natural resources is a plus.
The successful candidate will have opportunities to:
attend meetings and work with agency topic experts to create communications and outreach products
engage with the public partners and members of the news media
learn how to engage audiences and promote brand awareness through content creation
develop an understanding of communications best practices
assist with writing assignments (news releases web content social media video scripts etc.)
assist with video production
assist with social media management and learn to assess analytics such as followers engagements and other metrics and provide recommendations for improvement
NOTE: This is an hourly wage ($16.50/hr.) (Summer Intern) position that is approved for up -to 360 hours the duration of the internship program from June 8 2026-August 7 2026.
This position will be located at our Charlottesville Headquarters. Typical hours of work will be 8:00-4:30 Monday through Friday. Teleworking options are not available.

Strong verbal and written communication skills
Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously
Meet deadlines
Ability to work well in a team setting but also independently
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
