Job Summary

POSITION: Camp Counselor I

REPORTS TO: Director Camp

STATUS: Seasonal Full-Time Exempt Camp Worker (as defined in Section 18897 of the Health and Safety Code) Will be needed roughly between mid-June to mid-August 2026. Final dates will be confirmed at offer.

SALARY RANGE: $77.71 - $87.71 - Daily Rate (per CA Labor Code 1182.4) paid semi-monthly

Founded in San Francisco in 1902 the LightHouses purpose is to promote the independence equality and self-reliance of people who are blind or visually impaired. The LightHouse is currently in a period of growth increasing our capacity to serve more low-vision and blind clients.

OVERVIEW:

As a residential camp for the blind counselors are responsible for the overall provision of a traditional camp experience to all blind and visually impaired campers. This includes but not limited to: inventing new blind-friendly programming motivating campers to use non-visual techniques adapting all activities so that all campers can participate fully regardless of their level of vision. Counselors should encourage active participation in camp meals clean-up and other daily functions through fun activities. Counselors provide supervision to recreational activities create educational experiences promote independence and supervise the health and safety of children and adults. Applicants must also have the ability to work with campers that have secondary disabilities (developmental hearing impairments and/or mobility restrictions).

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • High School graduate
  • Some college education preferred
  • Current First Aid and CPR certifications
  • Previous work in a camp school or community service setting
  • Experience working with individuals who are blind/visually impaired preferred
  • Knowledge of Braille and/or sign language preferred

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Camper Supervision & Development
  • Assist in the supervision guidance and organization of campers in their living units activities and throughout camp to support positive camper experiences.
  • Apply principles of youth development and blindness awareness to foster strong camper relationships inclusivity and empowerment.
  • Ensure campers are supervised at all times and adhere to safety guidelines.
  • Program Leadership & Implementation
  • Assist in developing and implementing camp activities in alignment with the camps mission and outcomes.
  • Lead and support instructional activities across various program areas.
  • Engage actively in all assigned program areas ensuring activities align with camper interests and abilities.
  • Support specialized camp activities including waterfront nature exploration arts and crafts and all-camp events.
  • Health Safety & Well-Being
  • Maintain high standards of health and safety for campers and staff.
  • Provide daily care and ensure the well-being of campers recognizing and addressing personal health needs.
  • Ensure campers receive medications as directed by the health care manager.
  • Identify and address camper or staff concerns reporting to the camp health manager or director when necessary.
  • Monitor and maintain proper use care and maintenance of camp equipment and facilities reporting repairs as needed.
  • Role Modeling & Leadership
  • Serve as a positive role model for campers and staff through behavior attitude and adherence to camp policies.
  • Uphold and enforce all safety security and camp procedural guidelines.
  • Demonstrate good sportsmanship respect and responsibility in all camp activities.
  • Collaboration & Communication
  • Provide verbal and written feedback as needed for evaluations and camper development.
  • Maintain clear positive communication with campers staff and leadership.
  • Attend and participate in regular staff meetings.
  • Camp Engagement & Special Events
  • Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities leading and supporting as assigned.
  • Assist in planning and supervising evening programs special events overnights and all-camp activities.
  • Stay informed on best practices through ongoing learning and engagement in instructional materials.

  • Maintain 100% confidentiality of individual health behavior concerns and other personal information of campers and staff.
  • Consistently learn and communicate a blindness-positive philosophy by applying current best practices in 100% of interactions as assessed through regular supervisor participant and peer feedback.
  • Consistently demonstrate respect and inclusivity by using culturally appropriate language and behavior in 100% of interactions as assessed through regular supervisor participant and peer feedback

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be willing to live on camp premises
  • Must be able to lift 70 pounds
  • Ability to enforce safety and emergency procedures
  • Ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situation requiring first aid
  • Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire evacuation illness or injury)
  • Possess the endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers
