Morgan Stanley Investment Management (MSIM) strives to provide outstanding long-term investment performance service and a comprehensive suite of investment management solutions to a diverse client base which includes governments institutions corporations and individuals worldwide. Morgan Stanley Investment Management Technology is responsible for the design development delivery and support of the global technical platforms that support the MSIM Business.


The individual will be working within the MSIM Global Risk and Analysis Technology team (GRA IT). GRA IT uses a mix of vendor products and in-house developed systems for measuring controlling and reporting investment risk metrics and performance analytics across the divisions $1.6 Trillion in Assets Under Management (AUM) covering equity fixed-income alternative and multi-asset portfolios. GRA IT also supports the monitoring and reporting of operational risk model change management and an exposure reporting platform that allows the drill-down of exposure of the $1.6 Trillion in AUM.
GRA IT currently has staff in New York Boston and West Conshohocken (near Philadelphia) in the US Montreal in Canada and Bengaluru in India.


What youll do in the role:
We are seeking a business-aware Lead Software Engineer to join GRA IT in its New York office. This is a Vice President level position (P4) and a great opportunity for an experienced developer to join a professional development team working on strategic initiatives as they replace key business systems and adopt a cloud-first platform.
The person in this role will have the following responsibilities:

  • Lead the design implementation and support of one or more applications that play vital roles in the reporting and managing of MSIMs investment and operational risk or performance analytics. Expected to be a hands-on contributor.

  • Work with Scrum Master and Product Owner to practice the Agile methodologies. Make significant contributions to promote team collaboration and strengthen team member accountability. Mentor junior members of the team.

  • Understand business objectives. Communicate effectively with both business users and developers to ensure business objectives are met. Work effectively with peers and other members of MSIM Technology staff.

  • Perform architectural design data schema design and programming framework design when needed. Actively participate in code review and other best programming practices such as reusable code to ensure high quality of implementation.

  • Strike a balance between the breadth and depth of technical expertise. A master developer knowledgeable of the tiniest language details yet capable of selecting the most practical solution that provides the best functionality-cost ratio.

What youll bring to the role:

  • Bachelors degree in computer science mathematics or other STEM fields.

  • Experience working in the financial services industry and knowledge of the investment management business. A strong mathematical background or understanding of financial quantitative calculations.

  • Excellent communication skills that enable the candidate to express thoughts clearly and logically both in speech and in writing and to both business and technical audiences.

  • 8 years of professional development experience preferably in an environment that focuses on distributing data via microservices and APIs.

  • Strong knowledge of Service Oriented Architecture/RESTful services. Understand the key characteristics of robust cloud computing.

  • Advanced knowledge of SQL and experience working with relational databases especially DB2 and Snowflake. Advanced knowledge of Python and Java with Python strongly preferred.

  • Working knowledge of the Unix and Linux environments.

Expected base pay rates for the role will be between $150000 and $210000 per year at the commencement of employment. However base pay if hired will be determined on an individualized basis and is only part of the total compensation package which depending on the position may also include commission earnings incentive compensation discretionary bonuses other short and long-term incentive packages and other Morgan Stanley sponsored benefit programs.
