WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION
This position generally works (Monday through Friday) 8:00am 4:30pm. Your office would be located in downtown Juneau.
As an Accountant in the CBJ Finance Controllers Division you will perform complex analysis reconciliations and journal entries for a variety of departments within the City. Primary responsibilities include monitoring revenue and expenditures regularly for accuracy and in comparison to budget for operations grants and capital projects as well as annual year-end analysis and adjusting entries. You will contribute to the development of the annual financial statements. As the primary contact for financial related questions you will support departments through their day-to-day financial transactions as needed. You will have the opportunity to work with CBJs independent auditors preparing work papers and answering questions.
Solid accounting skills are required as you will be reconciling accounts and transactions in various modules of the accounting system. Many tasks in this position are performed independently. However a strong team spirit and collaboration will be needed to fully succeed in supporting the accounting for the city hospital and school district.
As with most accounting jobs there is a busy season and some additional hours should be anticipated. The crunch time for CBJ Accountants is generally between mid-July and mid-November. It takes many hands and a bit of coordination to close out the fiscal year analyze and perform adjusting entries and close the books. Your participation and positive attitude during this time is essential to the successful deliverable of audited financial statements.
Accountant I (Range 16) - $ 33.64 - $35.92 (DOQ)
Education:
Associates degree in finance accounting or a related area of study.
Substitution:
Any combination of experience and/or education (i.e. post-secondary related courses occupational endorsement/certificate) that provides the applicant the knowledge skills and abilities typically gained in an associates degree in finance accounting or related area.

Accountant II (Range 18 - $ 38.33 - $40.92 (DOQ)
Education:
Associates degree in finance accounting or a related area of study.
Substitution:
Any combination of experience and/or education (i.e. post-secondary related courses occupational endorsement/certificate) that provides the applicant the knowledge skills and abilities typically gained in an associates degree in finance accounting or related area.

AND
Experience:
One (1) year of professional level experience as a Sales Tax Compliance Accountant I or an Accountant I with the City & Borough of Juneau or equivalent elsewhere.
OR
Two (2) years of expert technical work as an Accounting Technician III with the City & Borough of Juneau or the equivalent elsewhere.
Substitution:
A Certified Public Accountant may substitute for the required experience.
