Job Summary

General Description

The Stormwater Management Commission (SMC) is seeking one full-time intern to provide administrative support for SMC Flood Mitigation Program. This is a long-term position not to exceed 1000 hours. Essential Functions

  • Program Management Support will include but not limited to:
    • Communication and collaboration between SMC and homeowners stakeholders and various government entities
    • supporting project documentation administrative records and cost tracking
    • assisting with property transfer activities related to voluntary floodplain buyout projects
  • Bid Administrative Support will include but not limited to:
    • maintaining bid files
    • assistance with asbestos abatement planning and supervision
    • bid development and writeup
    • bid opening
    • bid tabulation
    • bid award and rejection notices
    • reference checks for winning bids
    • performance bonds
    • liability insurance
    • gathering required documentation for bids
  • Demolition Project Administrative Support will include but not limited to:
    • maintaining demolition files
    • scheduling demolitions
    • permit support
    • notice to proceed checklists
    • Habitat for Humanity and Recycling/Reuse coordination
    • site compliance and supervision
    • site documentation
    • coordination with other Lake County departments to facilitate utility disconnects
    • purchase and payment requests
    • maintaining accounting and budget balances

Knowledge Skills Abilities and Education Required


  • intermediate level knowledge of Microsoft Office products
  • ability to work both inside and outside in variable conditions
  • willing to engage in limited to moderately strenuous physical activity
  • highly motivated be willing to take initiative and coordinate with project managers to ensure assigned work items are completed on schedule
  • Experience with ESRI ArcGIS software is highly desirable but not required
  • high level of attention to detail
  • strong written and verbal communication skills

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • graduate of or student in a 2- or 4-year higher education program
  • emphasis on environmental science geography urban planning hazard or disaster (particularly flood) mitigation planning and who have an interest in local and federal government processes

Physical Requirements
  • Most of the work will be in the office but field visits are a possibility so candidate must be able to work both inside and outside in variable conditions and engage in limited to moderately strenuous physical activity

Supplemental Information

The candidate will work approximately 40 hours per week for a duration not to exceed 1000 hours. The desired start date is flexible. The candidate must have a valid drivers license and satisfactory driving record.
