POSITION SUMMARY:

The Research Scientist will play a key role in the Medicinal Chemistry Scale-Up Group working with a high degree of independence to synthesize small molecule drug candidates and intermediates on scales ranging from multi-grams to hundreds of grams for evaluation. The role requires advanced experimental troubleshooting process optimization and the ability to execute complex experimental procedures. The successful candidate will demonstrate resourcefulness self-sufficiency and the ability to design alternative approaches to achieve desired outcomes. Staying current with scientific literature and integrating new methodologies into research activities will be essential.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Synthetic Chemistry:

Design and execute experimental synthetic work to deliver materials on scales ranging from tens to hundreds of grams for local project teams.

Independently develop optimize and scale up synthetic processes to meet project requirements.

Collaboration and Knowledge Sharing:

Work collaboratively within the Scale-Up Group to ensure the rapid delivery of materials.

Share knowledge troubleshoot challenges and contribute to the continuous improvement of group processes.

Data Analysis and Reporting:

Systematically collate analyze and interpret complex data to generate cohesive conclusions and actionable recommendations for project decisions.

Prepare and deliver detailed study presentations clearly communicating experimental findings and conclusions.

Innovation and Research Development:

Stay updated with relevant scientific literature and incorporate new insights into research activities. Identify evaluate and implement emerging technologies to enhance existing platforms and maintain a competitive edge. Explore and validate novel experimental approaches and scientific principles to achieve project goals.

Safety and Compliance:

Demonstrate a diligent approach to process safety and hazard assessment.

Ensure all experimental work adheres to safety protocols and regulatory standards.

Knowledge Dissemination:

Contribute significantly to the preparation of patents and/or publications.

EDUCATION:

  • A minimum of a Good Honours degree in Chemistry (BSc or MSc level).
  • A PhD or post-doctoral experience in a relevant area of research or equivalent industrial experience.

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Proven experience in a large-scale synthetic laboratory delivering small molecule organic compounds.
  • Proficiency in working with large-scale glassware (5L to 20L) and a flexible approach to working on a variety of scales.
  • Strong synthetic chemistry expertise with a deep mechanistic understanding of reaction pathways.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform advanced experimental troubleshooting and process optimization.
  • Familiarity with process safety and hazard assessment with a meticulous approach to safety practices.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a collaborative and team-oriented mindset.
  • Experience in identifying and implementing emerging technologies to advance research capabilities.

Flex Designation:

On-Site Designated

Flex Eligibility Status:

In this On-Site designated role you will work five days per week on-site with ad hoc flexibility.
