SUMMARY
This position will oversee the medical services provided by the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians Tribal Health Services from their two clinic locations. This oversight function requires the Medical Director to oversee the medical practice of the mid-level providers and clinic physicians implement quality assurance initiatives function as the Clinical Laboratory Director and collaborate with the Clinic Supervisor to coordinate the medical services provided. The Medical Director will also be required to provide direct patient addition this position will provide medical consultation to the Health Services Director and assist with strategic planning of health services.
EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS - Minimum Necessary Qualifications
- A current and unrestricted license to practice medicine as a Physician in the State of Michigan; and
- Enrollment as a Provider in Medicare and Medicaid programs (or obtain within 90 days); and
- Possess Drug Enforcement Agency certification/licensing; and
- Board Certification in family practice or internal medicine.
- Working knowledge of sensitivity communication practices and interview techniques in order to speak with and for the patient.
- Physician with at least 5 years of family practice experience with at least 2 years of Medical Director experience preferably in a Tribal Clinic.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Establish a compassionate and therapeutic clinical environment for patients family community and the medical team.
- Assess patient health by interviewing performing physical examinations and obtaining updating and studying medical histories.
- Administer and prescribe treatments and medications.
- Determine conditions and health status by ordering or executing diagnostic tests such as X-rays Electrocardiograms and laboratory procedures; interprets test results.
- Refer patients to medical specialists for consultative services as necessary.
- Coordinate care with local hospitals reviewing pertinent records from hospitalists or other physicians and specialist associated with patient care.
- Promote integrated holistic healthcare referring patients to other programs and services internal and external to LRBOI.
- Document patient care thoroughly and accurately by charting patient in Electronic Medical Records and any other required recordkeeping systems within organizations requirements.
- Educate patients on wellness diet hygiene methods for disease prevention early detection guiding patients to available resources.
- Study and remain apprised of target population health trend data and communicate those trends to the Health Services Director and the medical team.
- Review on a regular basis and provide follow-up for chronically ill or long-term cases that require on-going medical attention.
- Develop and or update medical standing orders clinical policies and guidelines and treatment protocols as required.
- Provide services and advice in the capacity of Medical Director including case management supervision of mid-level nursing and allied health services personnel.
- Provide as required managed care counseling in matters involving Tribal Employee Health related benefits Contract Health Services and Extended Health Assistance Program medical necessity determinations for payment of benefits.
- Contribute to the evaluation of clinic programs and quality improvement through participation development and implementation of quality improvement initiatives.
- Maintains professionalism and confidentiality in all aspects of work and complies with all applicable tribal federal or state laws and procedures.
- All other position related duties as assigned by Health Services Directors.

During the course of employment the employee will consistently utilize and demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills strong organizational skills strong interpersonal and teamwork skills a heightened attention to detail and accuracy the ability to work independently as well as work cooperatively with other departments and a commitment to confidentiality. Knowledge of and the ability to maintain strict confidentiality of medical and administrative records adhering to the standards for health record-keeping under HIPAA and Privacy Act guidelines.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Provides collaborative and supervisory assistance with mid-level healthcare providers. Assists in the resolution of complaints requests and inquiries from patients.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Sitting or standing for long periods of time frequent walking and occasional lifting reaching bending kneeling or stretching is to be expected. The nature of the work also involves manual dexterity to operate office equipment and while keyboarding. An employee will need normal or corrected to normal range of sight and hearing and will routinely carry work related materials up to twenty-five (25) pounds. Work may involve exposure to infections communicable diseases contaminated materials bodily fluids and radiation resulting in the need to wear protective equipment such as masks eye protection rubber gloves and gowns.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in a climate controlled medical office environment. The employees work schedule may frequently need to be flexible and adjusted according to business need. The employee must be able to effectively handle stressful and compromising situations while remaining focused and professional as well as be able to deal with difficult people without losing perspective. Occasional overnight travel may be necessary to attend meetings or trainings.
