Job Responsibilities

  • Collect samples and run required analysis on a timely basis including but not limited to monthly analysis of S02 and VA and daily analysis for pre bottling reports and general cellar lab requests
  • Maintain laboratory equipment in accordance with manufacturers guidelines that include daily calibration of machines and trouble shooting machines that are out of calibration or give false results. Keep up with manufactures warranties and annual service agreements
  • Written down and traceability of all samples ran. Updating current results into a sortable spreadsheet or NAV to make available to anyone with access
  • Advise on potential new laboratory equipment that can improve results save time and or save money
  • Manage a lab tech in regards to training work load time cards vacation time overtime and general company guidelines including safety meetings and site specific laboratory safety
  • Manage and perform company audits and record keeping on the audits. Hold annual or semi annual meetings as necessary to satisfy requirements of the various company audits. Work with 3rd party wineries to complete their audits as necessary
  • Must insure there is always someone available in the lab during normal business hours to run samples by either the Enologist or lab tech
  • Run timely plating on newly bottled wines to lessen the chance a contaminated and or otherwise compromised wine does not leave the warehouse and end up in the market
  • Process and run necessary tests on all grape samples brought in from the vineyards. Information needs to be available to winemakers timely so pick decisions can be made
  • Be comfortable and educational to guests that may pop in from time to time while touring the winery. Answer questions and be professional to all guests
  • Support winemaking team on fermentation monitoring fining and other bench trials and special analysis including samples to a certified lab when necessary
  • Quality assurance evaluations for existing inventory and consumer concerns by sensory and/or analysis. This will include monthly QC tastings
  • Maintain HAACP certification and HAACP audits of the cellar and bottling areas
  • Maintain and or write up SOPs as necessary for the lab
  • Aid in training and support of acting QCs in bottling

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Lab Director and/or Enologist
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs
  • Self-starter with strong troubleshooting skills for laboratory equipment; comfortable communicating with equipment vendors via phone or email
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel including data entry and spreadsheet management
  • Experience with mass spectrometry equipment is a plus
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to clearly convey sample results to requestors across all departments
  • Availability to work up to six days per week during harvest
  • Ability to speak Spanish is a plus but not required
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to stay on task and prioritize workload effectively

Other details:

  • Full-time employment
  • Compensation: $25.00-$30.00 per hour dependent on experience plus benefits (Healthcare 401k once eligible etc.).
  • Start date: As soon as possible.
