Job Summary

Description / Position Overview

This is a .5 position working 20 hours per week.

About the Job: The purpose of this position is to conduct investigations and aid in investigating unsolved and cold-case homicide investigations.

This position will be assigned to the Investigations Division - Cold Case Unit


The work schedule which is subject to the needs of the department will primarily be Monday through Friday during regular business hours.

As a CCI in the Cold Case Unit you will:

  • Document and follow up on potential investigative leads.
  • Submit evidence to be processed to the Metro Crime Lab or CBI (Colorado Bureau of Investigation) for DNA evidence or other evidence of probative value.
  • Document and submit reports of the findings of assigned investigations in a thorough and timely manner.
  • Conduct field work including victim and witness interviews interrogations (a sworn detective must be present during the suspect interrogation) scene processing assisting in the application and execution of search warrants and court orders and other investigative tasks as needed.
  • Prepare and file cases with the District Attorneys office both in paper and digitally.
  • Testify in court when necessary.


Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Techniques theories and methods of investigation
  • Criminal procedures related to evidence and criminal investigations
  • Principles of filing and record keeping
  • Modern office technology and supporting software
  • Pertinent federal state and local laws codes and regulations
  • Properly and safely operate a motor vehicle
  • Work closely with and at the direction of police officers
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word and Excel)


Work is performed in the office and in the field with potential exposure to inclement weather. Frequent exposure to noise; possible exposure to biohazardous materials as well as aggressive individuals and criminal suspects.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in a related area of study; preferably in social work behavioral sciences or criminal justice.
  • Five years of full-time professional experience in a related field; preferably in law enforcement in a sworn position or five years of experience in a non-sworn position responsible for investigating various crimes.
  • Possess or obtain upon hire a valid non-probationary Colorado drivers license not subject to restrictions related to alcohol and/or drug-related violations or pending charges
  • Possess or obtain within three months of hire NCIC/CCIC (National Crime Information Center/Colorado Crime Information Center) certification
Education and Experience Equivalence:One year of relevant work experience may be substituted for one year of required education (OR) one year of academic coursework relevant to this position beyond the minimum requirement may be substituted for one year of required professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Computer-based investigative skills experience (e.g. social media cell phone data etc.).

  • Knowledge of and practical application of the Colorado Victims Rights Act.

  • Ability to review and analyze complex case files.

  • Strong organizational written and verbal communication skills.

  • Prior experience conducting homicide investigations.

  • Familiarity with cold case methodologies including advanced forensic technologies (e.g. DNA digital evidence etc.).

  • Ability to work independently; work well in a small team environment.

Physical Demands: Exerting 20-50 lbs. occasionally; 10-25 lbs. frequently; or up to 10 lbs. constantly.

Environmental Conditions: 20 hours/week. Office environment with some field work. Exposure to all weather conditions.
