The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention protection and preparation as well as the care custody and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody healthcare and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Description of Work
Reporting directly to the Business Officer at a multi-custody male correctional facility this positions primary responsibilities are supervision of subordinate staff administrative tasks and para-professional engineering work in the Maintenance Department. This position will ensure that the facility is maintained in a safe and efficient manner. This is afull-time position(40 hours per week) withState Benefitswith established working hours and may require working beyond normal work schedule to meet business need.

The salary grade for this position is NC17. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as or lower than their current position. If selected for this position a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience funding availability and internal equity. Based upon these factors a pay increase MAY result.
About Central Prison:
Central Prison in Raleigh NC has been in continuous service since 1884. It serves as the admission point into prison for adult male felons sentenced to 20 years or more and is the main medical and mental health center for male offenders. It also houses special populations including death row and safe-keepers.
While security requires that certain offenders remain in their cells there are more than 260 offender job assignments that include working in the kitchen laundry or canteen. Offenders also work as barbers janitors and clerks. Offenders can attend substance abuse group therapy meetings Bible studies or worship services.

Minimum Education and Experience
Some state job postings say you can qualify by an equivalent combination of education and experience. Associate degree in construction management air conditioning heating and refrigeration technology industrial maintenance technology or mechanical engineering technology from an appropriately accredited institution AND four (4) years of progressive experience in construction or facility maintenance including two (2) years of supervisory experience in construction maintenance and/or repair of buildings and facilities; OR High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma AND five (5) years of progressive experience in facility maintenance or construction including experience in at least three (3) building or mechanical trades including two (2) years of supervisory experience in construction maintenance and/or repair of buildings and facilities; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualifications: May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I II III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82 subpart F.
