Position Description

The mandatory orientation meeting will be on Wednesday March 4 2025. If you are invited to this meeting and fail to attend or are late you may be disqualified.

In addition all applicants are strongly advised to carefully read the sections on Minimum Qualifications and Conditions of Employment. No exceptions will be granted regarding the requirements stated therein. If you do not meet the Minimum Qualifications or are unwilling to comply with the Conditions of Employment you will not be accepted in the selection process.

Definition
Under general supervision they perform non-hazardous patrol- corrections- crime scene investigations- or communications-related duties. Explorers do not have police power. Explorers:
  • Exemplify the LVMPD Values both on and off duty.
  • Learn the duties and procedures of LVMPD officers including being taught how to conduct a car stop search a building handcuff suspects perform patrol activities use a firearm and apply traffic laws etc.
  • Learn the duties and procedures of certain LVMPD Explorer Career Paths - Patrol Corrections Crime Scene Investigations and Communications.
  • Acquire understanding on how different parts of LVMPD function together being taught how the Clark County and City jails operate; how K-9 Air Support the Gang Unit SWAT Communications etc. are used in conjunction with Patrol; tour various LVMPD facilities.
  • Compete with different Explorer posts from police departments across the United States; may travel to different cities to attend Law Enforcement Exploring Conferences as well as compete with other Explorers in law enforcement related scenarios.
  • Develop leadership skills self-confidence maturity and discipline.
  • Participate in community activities being called upon by the LVMPD and community organizations to help facilitate events and gatherings such as National Night Out First Tuesday Open Houses and Academy graduations among others.

Minimum Qualifications/Position-Specific Conditions

Training Education and Experience
  • Be between the ages of 16 and 20 years 6 months old by Wednesday April 1 2026.
  • Be a citizen/naturalized citizen or permanent resident alien without conditions on status of the United States of America by the date of the first test instrument
  • Have graduated from high school or obtained a GED OR be currently attending high school in good standing with a minimum GPA of 2.0 and with no recent suspensions or expulsions.
  • Have the ability to speak and understand English.
Conditions of Employment
  1. Personal Appearance:While on duty and/or representing the Department uniformed or otherwise all Department employees will be neat and clean in their appearance in public. Employees are prohibited from attaching affixing or displaying objects articles or jewelry on or through the nose tongue eyebrow or other exposed body part except the ears for females while on duty. Employees are prohibited from stretching or gauging their earlobes. All jewelry implants will not be exposed or visible while on duty. Tattoos or branding will not be exposed or visible while on duty and/or representing the Department. Such markings must be covered by clothing. Markings that cannot be covered by clothing will be covered using neutral-toned bandages or patches except for hands neck head or face tattoos. Makeup is not permissible to cover a tattoo. Tattoos or branding anywhere on the body that promote racism/discrimination indecency extremist or supremacist philosophies lawlessness violence or contain sexually explicit material are prohibited.
  2. Participate in the LVMPD Mental Wellness Program.
  3. Pay a one-time non-refundable enrollment fee of $20.00 in cash or money order at the first official meeting.
  4. Purchase basic clothing and equipment as outlined during the orientation meeting.
  5. Maintain and wear a uniform and pass inspections by officers.
  6. Be willing to submit to a background check and investigation and a drug test.
  7. Complete a one-week academy.
  8. Attend weekly or bi-weekly meetings.
  9. Volunteer a minimum of 10 hours each month.
  10. If currently attending high school maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0.
  11. If assigned as CSI Explorer after receiving their high school diploma or GED enroll in a college degree program and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0.
  12. If assigned as Police or Corrections Explorers pass the Nevada POST physical fitness test biannually.
  13. Separate from the Explorer Program upon 21st birthday.
  14. Vision sufficient to read the computer screen as well as fine print in documents.
  15. Hearing sufficient to hear conversations and directions in person over the telephone or over the radio.
  16. Dexterity and mobility sufficient to operate standard office equipment; climb ladders and stairs; and operate motorized equipment if needed.
  17. Agility sufficient to twist bend stoop kneel crouch reach forward and reach overhead.
  18. Endurance sufficient to sit at personal computer terminals; stand and move around while working indoors or outdoors; and/or wear a mask if needed.
  19. Strength sufficient to lift and carry moderately heavy items up to 25 lbs.

Applications must be submitted online and received by the posted closing date and time. Decisions on an applicants qualifications for this position will be made solely on the information contained in the application and therefore should be filled out in its entirety.

If you are a parent or legal guardian applying for multiple children/candidates each child/candidate must have their own candidate profile to apply.

Candidates meeting the minimum qualifications will be sent an Explorer Participation Physical Examination Evaluation Packet.This packet will need to be completed by the candidate and a Healthcare Provider and turned in prior to Monday March 30 2026.

Candidates meeting the minimum qualifications will be required to attend the mandatory orientation meeting on Wednesday March 4 2026. Tentatively the orientation meeting is scheduled at 6:30 pm PST.Individuals under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian to the orientation meeting. Parental approval is required which includes signatures by the applicant and his/her parent or guardian on a general liability release.

*The LVMPD reserves the right to modify the selection processes and test instruments in accordance with accepted legal ethical and professional standards.

**Due to security reasons personal belongings permitted in the facility will be limited. Items such as large backpacks briefcases duffle bags or similar items may not be allowed. Those items permitted will be left to the discretion of the LVMPD employees and may be subject to a search.
