Support Children and Make Lunchtime Safe and Enjoyable

Lunchtime is one of the most active and important periods in a primary school day. Children are moving between classrooms and the dining hall socialising with friends and getting a well-earned break from learning. For many its the highlight of the day; for some it can be overwhelming or challenging.

MDMS is recruiting Midday Meal Supervisors to join primary schools across Chelmsford Essex. This is a rewarding part-time term-time role for individuals who enjoy working with children want flexible hours and want to make a real difference in their local school community.

Even though the role is relatively short each daytypically 12 hoursyour presence is vital for ensuring that lunchtimes are structured safe and positive for every pupil.

Key Responsibilities

As a Midday Meal Supervisor you will:

  1. Supervise Pupils

    • Monitor children in dining areas classrooms corridors and playgrounds

    • Ensure behaviour is safe and appropriate intervening when necessary

    • Be attentive to children who may need extra support

  2. Support Mealtimes

    • Help younger or vulnerable pupils during lunch

    • Encourage table manners independence and positive mealtime routines

  3. Promote Positive Behaviour

    • Model politeness kindness and respect

    • Reinforce school rules consistently

    • Calmly manage minor conflicts between pupils

  4. Manage Playtime

    • Supervise outdoor and indoor play

    • Encourage inclusive games and teamwork

    • Ensure equipment is used safely and appropriately

  5. Provide Emotional Support

    • Support pupils who feel anxious upset or isolated

    • Be a friendly approachable adult they can trust

  6. Health Safety and First Aid

    • Be aware of dietary requirements allergies and medical needs

    • Administer basic first aid if required (training provided)

    • Report accidents incidents or safeguarding concerns to school staff

  7. Team Collaboration

    • Work closely with teachers teaching assistants and other lunchtime staff

    • Follow school routines to ensure smooth transitions between lunch play and lessons

  8. Maintain Structure and Routine

    • Help enforce consistent routines

    • Create a calm structured environment where all pupils feel supported
