Director of Mechanical Engineering Location: San Francisco CA (On-site 5 days/week)

About the Role A fast-moving hardware and technology company is seeking a Director of Mechanical Engineering to lead the mechanical and product design function for a suite of advanced electromechanical products. This role oversees the full product lifecycle from early concept through mass production and requires deep technical leadership hands-on problem-solving and strong cross-functional execution. The company has an ambitious roadmap involving new highly complex product lines and this position plays a central role in shaping and delivering that vision.
The ideal leader has extensive experience launching innovative hardware products thrives in a high-performance environment and is motivated by building devices that blend mechanical systems sensors thermal/fluid components and user-centric design.
Key Responsibilities Technical & Product Leadership -
Drive mechanical engineering strategy and execution across all product stages: concept development validation and production.

Lead teams working across mechanical engineering soft goods design prototyping and testing.

Provide technical direction on systems involving thermals fluids sensing mechanisms actuators and materials.

Ensure product architecture aligns with user experience performance requirements and long-term scalability.

Own design reviews phase gates and decision-making that balances technical feasibility timelines and quality.
Cross-Functional Collaboration -
Partner closely with leaders in electrical engineering software engineering operations clinical/sensing finance and marketing to bring new products from idea to market.

Work directly with executive leadership to define product roadmaps technical direction and development priorities.

Coordinate with global suppliers and manufacturing partners to ensure product readiness and efficient production.
Manufacturing & Supplier Interface -
Oversee early builds through final production including DFM/DFA tolerance analysis GD&T and production-quality standards.

Travel internationally (particularly to China/Asia) to align with suppliers participate in builds troubleshoot issues and ensure production milestones are met.

Guide the transition of products to high-volume manufacturing environments.
Team Leadership & Development -
Recruit mentor and grow a high-performing engineering team.

Foster a culture centered around accountability innovation and continuous improvement.

Implement scalable processes to ensure operational effectiveness including documentation reviews and technical best practices.
Key Qualifications -
10 years leading development of complex electromechanical systems (consumer electronics medical devices automotive or similar industries).

Proven background delivering products under aggressive timelines with lean yet high-performing teams.

2 years of experience managing mechanical and product design engineers directly.

Strong expertise in:

Injection molding and plastics

Sensor and electronics integration

Mechanism design

Thermal engineering and heat transfer

Fluid systems and actuators

Soft goods development (highly preferred)

Experience bringing products to high-volume production in Asia.

Solid understanding of DFM/DFA tolerance analysis and GD&T.

Bachelor s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.

Ability and willingness to travel internationally as needed.
