Project Summary

The Digital and Print Content Writer creates edits and manages content across print and digital platforms to communicate NSFs research programs and impact to diverse audiences. The role requires translating complex scientific and technical concepts into clear engaging language while ensuring compliance with federal accessibility and plain-language standards.

Role Summary

The Digital and Print Content Writer produces high-quality communications for NSF including web pages reports blogs fact sheets press releases and white papers. This role supports accurate messaging about NSF programs and policies working collaboratively with OLPA staff program officials and subject-matter experts. All content must meet federal compliance standards and effectively reach scientific and non-expert audiences.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Write and edit articles white papers fact sheets blogs press releases web pages and other publications on science topics of stakeholder interest including significant or potentially controversial topics.
  • Translate complex scientific and technical concepts into plain language for non-expert audiences.
  • Draft and edit web content summarizing policies and guidance for proposers and awardees.
  • Conduct research and fact-checking by reviewing source documents and collaborating with subject-matter experts.
  • Ensure all content complies with the Plain Writing Act of 2010 and Section 508 accessibility standards.
  • Submit four writing samples demonstrating ability to communicate scientific topics effectively (2 for Task 2 2 for Task 4).
Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum 5 years of professional writing and editing experience including at least 3 years writing about scientific or technical subjects.
  • Experience producing both short- and long-format content including press releases fact sheets blogs reports and web pages.
  • Experience conducting research and fact-checking through written sources and direct SME interviews.
  • Degree in journalism communications or a science-related field (preferred).
  • Proficiency in AP Style plain language writing and editing for scientific accuracy.
  • Familiarity with federal communication requirements including the Plain Writing Act of 2010 and Section 508 compliance.
  • Knowledge of SEO and AEO principles.

  • Experience writing for federal agencies scientific funders or research-focused organizations.
  • Familiarity with federal communications standards applied to technical subject matter.
  • Ability to balance scientific accuracy with audience accessibility.
  • Experience supporting science technology research or higher-education communications.
