Job Title: Nurse Practitioner-Behavioral Health
Location: Portales NM
Job Description:
The Nurse Practitioner Behavioral Health provides advanced practice nursing care specializing in behavioral and mental health for patients across the lifespan in ambulatory clinic and/or hospital settings. Responsibilities include psychiatric evaluation diagnosis medication management therapeutic interventions and coordination of care within an interdisciplinary team. This role supports expanded access to behavioral health services while delivering high-quality patient-centered care.
Essential Job Responsibilities:
  • Promote the mission vision and values of the organization.
  • Conduct comprehensive psychiatric and behavioral health evaluations for new and established patients.
  • Diagnose and manage mental health conditions including mood disorders anxiety depression psychosis and substance use disorders.
  • Prescribe monitor and adjust psychiatric medications in accordance with evidence-based practice and applicable regulations.
  • Provide brief therapeutic interventions and supportive counseling as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with physicians therapists social workers and nursing staff to develop and implement individualized treatment plans.
  • Educate patients and families on diagnoses treatment options and medication management.
  • Coordinate referrals and community resources to ensure continuity of care.
  • Document patient encounters accurately and timely in the electronic health record.
  • Participate in case conferences team meetings and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain required licensure certifications and continuing education.
  • Demonstrate professionalism empathy and cultural competence in all interactions.
  • Serve as a clinical resource for behavioral health education and best practices.
  • Provide crisis intervention and support during urgent or emergent psychiatric situations.

  • Ensure compliance with clinic operations safety and infection control policies.
Qualifications:
  • Masters or Doctorate degree in Nursing from an accredited program.
  • Current Nurse Practitioner license in the state of New Mexico (or eligibility for licensure).
  • Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) certification preferred or NP with documented behavioral health training and experience.
  • Current DEA registration with prescriptive authority for controlled substances.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required; Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred.
  • Minimum of 1 2 years of clinical experience in psychiatric or behavioral health settings preferred.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and current trends in medical and behavioral health science.
  • Strong assessment diagnostic and therapeutic skills in mental health care.
  • Excellent communication collaboration and patient-centered care skills.
  • Strong organizational and time-management abilities.
  • Ability to make sound clinical decisions in complex situations.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating within an interdisciplinary team.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to handle challenging patient or staff situations professionally.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
  • Ability to work irregular hours including on-call shifts.
  • Physically demanding high-stress healthcare environment.
  • Exposure to blood body fluids communicable diseases chemicals radiation and repetitive motions.
  • Ability to push pull lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Full range of body motion including lifting and positioning patients.
  • Ability to work in varying temperatures.
  • Ability to stand or walk for approximately 8 hours per day.
  • Ability to sit for 2 4 hours per day.
