About the Summer Internship Program

The Summer Internship Program provides undergraduate and graduate students and beginning professionals with practical experience in a specific area of museum work at The Museum of Modern Art. Interns participate in weekly professional development activities designed to increase understanding of the Museums various collections exhibitions and departments. The Museum hosts approximately 25 interns in various departments across our institution. Participants may arrange for academic credit through their school but it is not a requirement.

MoMA Summer 2026 internships require a commitment of four days per week. The schedule is Monday-Thursday 9:30 a.m.5:30 p.m. One must have a minimum of two years of college completed (or equivalent) by June 2026 in order to apply.

All summer intern applications are due by Sunday March 1st by 11:59 PM EST.

Department Projects & Tasks

Since the inaugural Kravis Studio Residency in 2022 MoMA has hosted four artists and their bespoke practices giving audiences a peek into how they work. The residency has a specific structure with an artist fee and production and set of parameters. Looking to 2029 the intern will help audit the residencies we have completed and to look at artist residencies in other institutions and venues to bring learnings together.

The intern will will involved in the lead up and opening of The Studio Residency for 2026 which will host the collective Pageant which opens in August 2026. Tasks include supporting rehearsals for the artist Sarah Michelson a former residency artist who will be preparing for a major commission in MoMAs Marron Atrium and a collection work/performance by Naufus Ramirez/Figueroa.

The intern should consider:

  • Understanding the industry standard (if there is one) for artist residencies
  • What do artists need or want in a residency
  • Are they happy to have public moments or would they rather complete privacy
  • Are the fees we pay supportive enough

Department Skillset Requirements

Candidates with experience in a theater or museum setting or with a background in theater exhibition planning live performance or similar field is highly desirable. Applicant should be passionate about performance as a medium and particularly interested in how our performance is represented in museums. Successful candidates have some experience working in performance either as a practitioner or on the crew. Willingness to be flexible with schedules is preferred.
