As a Landscape Technician I you will ensure that the $13 million in annual landscape infrastructure contributed by developers meets the high standards our citizens expect for environmental and social sustainability. The development industry supports this sustainability by contributing $13 million annually in landscaping infrastructure to the City of Edmonton through the development process. This position plays a vital role in ensuring the quality and compliance of developer-contributed landscaping assets transferred to the City. This independent role safeguards the Citys interests by auditing construction recommending asset acceptance or rejection and reviewing maintenance practices.
Apply your landscaping knowledge and exercise sound judgment to mitigate risks facilitate timely project approvals and ensure that new landscape infrastructure meets City standards for long-term performance and public benefit. This position is crucial for the successful integration of private development projects into the Citys green infrastructure network.
What will you do:
- Conduct and assist with independent field audits of municipal landscaping improvements throughout the construction and establishment phases
- Support the Landscape Technician II in performing detailed pre-screenings of project submissions and technical documents provided by consultants
- Participate in on-site pre-inspections and formal site visits to evaluate requirements for Construction Completion Certificates (CCC) and Final Acceptance Certificates (FAC)
- Generate comprehensive documentation of site deficiencies through detailed photo logs and annotated plan mark-ups
- Manage essential administrative workflows including reviewing applications maintaining digital filing systems and processing technical documentation
- Respond to inquiries from various City departments and external partners regarding landscaping requirements and the inspection lifecycle
- Ensure all developer-contributed assets meet City standards to safeguard long-term green infrastructure and public benefit
- Minimum completion of a two (2) year technology diploma in Urban Forestry Horticulture Landscape Technology Landscape Construction or related field
- A minimum of two (2) years of related experience
Assets:
- Certification from International Society of Arboriculture (ISA)
- Certification in GIS mapping
Skills for success:
- Apply extensive knowledge of landscaping construction best practices methodologies and design principles to ensure high-quality urban infrastructure
- Utilize technical expertise in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to identify noxious weeds pests and diseases while evaluating topsoil quality against City specifications
- Demonstrate proficiency in identifying plant species common to the Alberta climate to verify health and compliance with approved planting plans
- Quickly learn and apply City of Edmonton guiding documents including Landscape Design and Construction Standards (Vol 5) and Development Servicing Agreements
- Interpret and translate complex landscape construction plans into accurate field audits and inspections of construction progress
- Navigate computer applications and digital filing systems with ease including Google Workspace SAP Pictometry and Gmail
- Build and maintain productive professional working relationships with consultants developers contractors and internal City staff
- Produce high-quality technical writing and clear communication to ensure thorough documentation of compliance with City policies
- Exercise strong organizational skills and attention to detail when verifying documentation and assessing site-specific requirements
- Conduct research and apply problem-solving skills to gather information make informed decisions and develop professional recommendations
- Represent the City of Edmonton in a professional honest respectful and safe manner at all times
- Manage multiple tasks and responsibilities effectively while ensuring strict compliance with City policies and safety procedures

- Compliance with the City of Edmontons safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as wearing steel toed boots is a requirement for this position.
