General Responsibilities
This position performs bus operations work that combines bus driving duties with the responsibility for training new bus drivers and bus attendants. The employee assigned to the training role is responsible for conducting behind-the-wheel training of new bus drivers communicating student information to drivers maintaining lists and reports and driving a bus when regular drivers are absent. Work is performed independently in accordance with established guidelines and procedures.
Minimum Education Training Experience & License Requirements
Completion of a high school education or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) or training as a bus driver or any equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the above knowledge skill and ability.
Work requires a valid Virginia State Commercial Drivers License with the following endorsements:
Passenger School Bus and Air Brakes
Essential Job Functions
As driver/trainer conducts behind-the-wheel training of new bus drivers; calls drivers via two-way radio to provide names of new students and/or address changes; receives and files mileage reports from bus drivers; performs general office duties such as answering telephones completing and/or filing reports; and drives a bus in the absence of regular bus drivers.
As driver/dispatcher assigns substitute bus drivers to various buses on designated runs; dispatches drivers using two-way radio maintains list of drivers aides substitutes and routes provides written and/or oral instructions to substitutes who are first-time drivers drives bus in absence of regular drivers and in emergency situations.
As required or assigned performs duties as a school bus driver.
Performs related work as required.
Required Knowledge Skills & Abilities
Good knowledge of bus handling and safety techniques.
Good knowledge of traffic and highway safety rules regulations and of local street and road systems.
Good knowledge of bus driver training techniques.
Some knowledge of basic first aid.
Ability to conduct class and behind-the-wheel training.
Ability to safely drive a school bus to train others in safe efficient driving and to assess performance.
Ability to read write and complete forms and reports.
Ability to effectively communicate with students parents and school officials.
Ability to maintain effective control over groups of children or young adult students and to ensure student behavior is not distractive to safe driving.
Ability and willingness to assist physically mentally and emotionally handicapped students in being transported to and from school.
Physical Attributes
Sufficient strength agility dexterity and ocular-motor reaction time to operate a school bus at all times including emergency situations.
Sufficient vision and visual acuity to operate a bus during assigned periods.
Work may involve the lifting and/or carrying students with disabilities.
Hazards
Work may involve exposure to road hazards including accidents and driving in poor weather conditions exposure to student body fluids and exposure to fumes from bus exhaust systems.
Work may involve driving while students are noisy and disruptive.
Unusual Demands
Driving record must comply with Virginia School Law. Must remain in compliance with state county and local laws and regulations regarding use of controlled substances and alcohol as applied to school bus drivers.
Work requires being seated for extended lengths of time.
