Job Description:

Intake Worker details:
Day Time position - Sunday to Thursday

Shift: 8:30am to 4pm (includes 30 minute unpaid meal break) 35 hours per week Fixed-Term - Full-Time

Pay: $21.81 per hour

POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY: The Intake Worker interviews and screens potential clients determines client suitability and undertakes intake functions.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

The incumbent is responsible for the following range of job duties characteristic or typical of the job class:

  • Takes responsibility for routine intake processes and decisions following standard procedures

  • Coordinates intake with the counselling team; attends case management meetings to report on new intakes

  • Records intake processes and decisions

  • Develops case histories for all incoming clients/residents

  • Liaises with referral sources and other external agencies as needed (e.g. welfare police parole urgent situations)

  • Works with government and community funders to ensure funding is in place

  • Conducts comprehensive program orientation for all clients/residents

  • Fosters positive relations with community social services agencies/resources

  • May assist as a relief counsellor (non-clinical)

  • Performs other duties as assigned

NOTE: Not all incumbents perform all of the duties described above but perform a similar range of duties.

CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT:
Internal: Ministry Unit leadership staff and volunteers.
External: Community members external agencies guests/clients of ministry unit in person.

MANAGERIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reports directly to the Residential Services Supervisor

The incumbent is responsible for their own time and effort only. They may demonstrate work methods to new employees volunteers and/or students.

FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:
The incumbent is involved in minor financial matters regularly or on a relief basis or has responsibility for the wise use of their own resources.

They may be authorized to spend disburse or collect small amounts of cash. The incumbent has very little input into the annual budget.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work is primarily performed in a facility/shelter within the ministry unit.

  • The performance of the job requires continuously sitting and a moderate amount of keyboarding

  • The performance of the job requires moderate attention when interviewing clients working with numbers and occasional documentation.

  • The incumbent may interact with individuals displaying challenging behaviors.

  • Flexibility is required and the schedule may vary according to requirements of responsibilities.

  • The incumbent will work under the following disagreeable conditions:

  • Dealing with angry people

  • Verbal abuse

The job incumbent may be exposed to the risk of minor to moderate injury or illnesses due to:

  • Physical attacks by others (i.e. attack by a potential client)

  • Exposure to infectious diseases

  • Sharp objects

  • Other dangerous situations

EDUCATION CERTIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS:
The successful job applicant will hold a certificate or diploma in Human Sciences/Addictions from a Community College.

SPECIAL LICENSES DIPLOMAS CERTIFICATIONS OR REQUIREMENTS:

The successful applicant will hold/have:

  • Certificate or Diploma in Human Sciences/Addictions

  • Criminal Police Investigation Check (CPIC)

  • Appropriate immunization Measures

  • Current Certification in First Aid/CPR

NOTE: An alternative level of education and experience may be acceptable.

Experience and Knowledge Requirements:

One year but less than three years of prior related experience including experience in the applicable community social services sector.

Skills and Capabilities:

  • Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.

  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Armys health and safety policies and procedures.

  • Good oral and written communication skills.

  • Good conflict-resolution skills and ability to de-escalate the situation.

  • Adaptability to change and frequent interruptions.

  • Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment and take the initiative.

  • Demonstrated attention to detail with good analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Demonstrated patience understanding and professionalism in all interactions.

  • High level of integrity confidentiality and professional ethics with a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility.

  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to follow detailed instructions accurately.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including active listening empathy and the ability to work effectively with staff clients families volunteers and visitors from diverse cultural backgrounds.

The incumbent must take the following precautionary measures (in addition to health and safety rules):

  • Vaccination for Hepatitis

  • Universal Precautions

  • WHMIS Training

  • Valid Certification in First Aid/CPR

  • Criminal Record Check

  • Adult Abuse Registry Check

  • Child Abuse Registry Check

  • Drivers Abstract

  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training

  • Use of protective gloves

  • Use of protective masks (as needed)

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $21.81 to $21.81 with a maximum of $21.81.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions internal equity and candidate experience skills and qualifications relevant to the role.
