What Youll Do
The Chief Technology and Innovation Officer (CTIO) plays a pivotal role in shaping Pantexs vision and strategy for technology and innovation. The CTIO is a senior position responsible for steering Pantexs vision and strategy for technological advancements in what and how we accomplish work. To be successful this role must foster relationships with universities and national laboratories to accelerate idea generation and the advancement of technologies. This role demands a strong blend of technical expertise strategic foresight and exceptional skills to cultivate a culture of innovation. The successful candidate must have knowledge and experience securing funding to implement new technologies and innovations. The CTIO will work closely with leaders including the Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Technology Development & Deployment: Foster the development and implementation of state-of-the-art technologies to support an agile production environment ensuring alignment with strategic business objectives and the Pantex Strategic Agenda. Progress new solutions and initiatives being developed by teams of scientists and engineers to enhance production efficiency quality and capability.
- Digital Transformation: Lead Pantex Digital Transformation efforts and alignment within the Pantex Strategic Agenda.
- Cross-functional Collaboration: Aligning innovation initiatives with overall business goals by working closely with other senior leaders and departments.
- External Partnerships: Strengthening collaborations that will identify and deploy advanced technologies foster strategic partnerships and interface with the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) regarding R&D to mature
- Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) projects through Plant-Directed Research and Development (PDRD). The partnerships include at a minimum universities and national laboratories.
- Innovation Management: Leading the entire innovation lifecycle from idea generation and testing to scaling new products services and processes.
- Advisory Role: Provides strategic direction and leadership for the plant technology and research functions. Mentors integrated teams of scientists and engineers fostering a culture of innovation collaboration and continuous improvement.
- PDRD Program Advising: Overseeing project selections and ensuring research initiatives align with long-term strategic objectives within the Plant-Directed Research and Development (PDRD) program.
Steering Committee Governance: Chairing the Research & Development Senior Steering Group (R&DSSG) and the Digital Transformation Senior Steering Group (DTSSG) overseeing the advancement of applicable innovative ideas.
Minimum Job Requirements
- Bachelors Degree with: Minimum 12 years of relevant experience. (Typical experience 15 years.)
- OR Masters Degree with: Minimum 10 years of experience. (Typical experience 15 years.)
- OR PhD with: Minimum 6 years of experience.

Preferred Job Requirements
- 20 years of relevant experience.
- PhD in any science or engineering field with research experience.
- Experience building and managing R&D portfolios with preference being experience in laboratory or academic settings.
- Proven ability to engage in innovative R&D planning.
- Prior experience successfully securing project funding.
- Familiarity with the Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) or the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science or broader DOE lab experience.
- Demonstrated experience across multiple sites laboratories and/or universities.
- Experience in R&D planning that includes facility and capital projects.
